Elliot´s Trackside Diner - September 2012

I ripped down the old layout and started fresh as a few things were bugging me. The code 80, the track plan… Anyway I’ve built my benchwork now 8’ x 3’ modules x 2 in an L shape. (Bigger and better!) I’m just waiting on some funds so I can get a box of track and a few turnouts to get started.

Weather has been good! Save for 3mm (1/8"!!) yesterday we’ve not had rain for 62 days! We’re in for a hot dry summer with lots of severe storms.

Cheers!

Looks like I have top!

Have at it!

Evenin’ folks!

Janie just a cup of decaf please…

Ken, glad you made the right decision to get yourself to the emergency room with the toe issue. I agree with Jeffrey! Get your regular doctor to refer you to the podiatrist ASAP! Insist on it. It could be the difference between saving or losing the toe!

Had a great supper over at my son’s house and got to play for a while with both granddaughters before leaving for School. It was fun going to an open house and being the role of Grandpa rather than harried teacher! We were all in the kindergarten room when one of the other parents looked at me, Yelled, “Mr. Howard!” at the top of her lungs and ran over and gave me a bear hug! One of those little Middle School girls I taught way back when. We stood and talked for a few minutes and then gave each other another big hug. My DILs mother who was also with us was grinning at me and asked if it was one of my students. I haven’t stopped grinning yet! One of those moments when all the time and effort I put into my career comes back letting me know I did some things right way back then! [:D][:D][:D] Good feeling…

I guess I’ll see if I can get a bit more done in the train room.

Later!

Evening guys

Well I don’t know wheter to be relieved or mad. On the way back from the local train club last night, I had a tire go out. One of the metal bars that hold the landscape timbers had apparently worked itself up and out. I knew something was wrong when I heard a pop and heard a hissing when I got out. It got the side of my tire, bad enough it got through the internal braiding. The wheel was unscathed though (it bulges out about 3/4 of an inch). I though I was going to have to cough up a bunch of $, because of the size of my rear tires (275/40 R17). My father had the idea of checking a local shop that does a lot of tire work. The guy there said there was no way to fix it, and they doubted they had any in that size. Just as he got back from checking out back, I saw not 1, but 2 used tires of the right size (one passeneger and the other driver’s). I pointed to them and said there are two right there. He said they were holding them for someone, but he was supposed to pick them up 2 weeks ago. So I wound up getting the tire installed and balanced for $45. Got home and checked the pressure, and had to dial the pressure back about 10 psi (down to 34).

Trainwise I’ve just been painting wheelsets. Kind of unhappy I had to spend my spare $ for a tire.

Garry, I’m a long ways from done. Still have yet to order detail parts, figure out a way to keep the mounting lugs that stewart uses and have blank-out panels (no portholes), prime the shells, cut the brows off, sand down the mold lines on the As, cut skirts and some pilots, and drill out the remaining shells (6).

Jim, as they say; the first cut is alwsays the hardest. It’s not too difficult when one does it enough. my problem is finishing projects.

Good Evening All,

Got down to the basement tonight and discovered … a layout! Started on the swing bridge that spans the entry to the isle. Little by little using scrap from other projects. Finished the pinout of the new data harnesses at the shiop (a laborious project involving D-sub connectors and a meter with adaptors to suit).

Jeffery wanted to know what we had on our layouts now out on Main Street, Right now, mothing at all but trrack and a few trees. Once I get the bridge done, I intend to finish the drops and run some before starting the other scenes.

Packer - nice score on the tires. I never got that lucky.

See Y’all Later, J.R.

Dang straight. Everybody gets to see what I’ve done on mine so why shouldn’t I have an idea about what they’ve done on theirs.[:)][8D]

What do you know! I’m over 20,000 posts!

Never did get around to mowing the grass today. My father came up with other things to do. Got a new keyboard for my computer. The old one has been slowly dying for about a year. My new one is a Delux K7018 Executive Standard. Also got a new mouse for the computer I have at my parents place. The old one died last week. The place I got the stuff is going out of business so I got a really good deal on them. $16 total.

I got a little work done on the old tractor this morning. Looks like it’s gonna be a two man job.

Time for me to call it a night. See y’all tomorrow.

Good Evening…

We had a busy day here…all kinds of stuff done, including some deck repairs…dang deer…[(-D]…Audrey went out the back door and said deer tried to run through the railing…it was on the backdeck when Audrey opened the door…scared the poor thing…[:-^]

Anyways…off to [|)]

Good Morning! from Tipton IN.

NKP depot, Alexandria IN,1960-1970s

Good Morning all,

51F, 61%, Hi 74F, PM Showers

Jim, yep second career and a second chance to prepare for retirement properly this time, when I started with the CG in 1987 they didn’t have a 401 type plan and making less than $19K a year didn’t leave much room for retirement investments. Divorce at year 16 in a 22 year career didn’t help anything either. So this time I started off right with TSP (a 401 type plan) and in 16.5 years I hope to be able to retire properly at the age of 61.

Paul, I hope everything works out during the next medical appointment.

Curt, you need to get better so you can play with your trains!

WARNING the following comments are on topic

discretion is advised

Couple of weeks ago I bought a Bachmann Mogul from the local hobby shop (LHS) for $44.00, NIB. I ran it on the club layout last night and it pulled 8 reefers no problem. Club

Gidday All, A mug of hot chocolate please.

I had a similar or of thought JimRCGMO when I saw Galaxys’ post, it reminded me of a high school friends poster, back in the early 70s, which depicted Snoopy in his WW1 flying ace gear sitting on top of a Lockheed F104 Starfighter with Charlie Brown sitting behind him going Aaaaaaaarrrrgh !! [:)]

OzJim. What thickness of MDF are you using for your new layout top??

Well as it’s now 2349 hours here, currently 43F with the chance of a light frost in the morning, followed by a fine day with a possible high of 55F, its time for bed.

Thoughts and best wishes for all who need them,

Cheers,the Bear.

Good Morning…

Got ‘dem ol’ Raining Kinda Day Blues Again Mama…raining and a little bit cool out there…only 46F out there right now going for a supposed high of 64F…in the rain…well…maybe…

Got a few things need done this morning then it is off to LHS to see about getting a new pinvise…so that the other one will show up…[*-)]

Anyways…have a good day!!

Good Morning All,

42F and mostly sunny (the optomists partly cloudy). Getting things calmed down and smoothed out in the shop. Met with our proposed new truck driver yesterday - seems a nice competent person and should fit in with the rest of our bunch. We have no race this weekend for once and the next event is the end of the month so I can breath a bit.

Roughed in the swing bridge underpinnings last night but I need to make the whole thing sturdier so I don’t spend all my time running after adjustments to keep things on track. I’m seriously considering leaving the track uncut until I get to the point where it is an issue ducking under. The bridge is at the head of the isle I need to access to get into the layout. What do you think?

Haven’t seen Ulrich or Der John in a bit. I know Der was looking at moving - any more on that? Time to pick up tools- the vultures are circling the office. CUL, J.R.

Good morning, Diners. I have my computer class today at 10:30. It will be nice to not hurry. We had our OSHA/WISHA class after work yesterday. So now all I need is the BLS renewal part.

Thanks for all the compliments on Larry’s painting. I told him that I would go with him to his art league meeting tonight.

Did someone say that der is moving? He has that huge layout.

Sue

Good Morning!!!

Coffee, a couple eggs over medium, hashbrowns and a couple three strips of bacon please. Thanks.

Mostly sunny, with a high near 75. Currently it’s 53 and doesn’t feel too chilly anymore. Guess that’s the sign of things to come. Winter is coming.

Still plugging away at the projects. Little by little I’m gettin ‘em done[Y]. Maybe this winter, I’ll be to the point where I can get back to normal. Of course normal hasn’t been here since Mom started getting bad and she started moving out of her house…[^o)]…you know, I couldn’t even tell you how long ago that was. 4….5 years ago? Ah, it don’t matter. Main thing is, there is still a lot of cleanup to do around this place even after the Remodeling is done.

Still waiting for mortar to dry before able to proceed with shower topside…

Ya’ll have a good day!!!

Todd: I know that when my father passed away it took us around…oh…7 years to get out from under all that stuff in our basement and wherever…[:S]…and my remuddling has not even finished either…[*-)]

Sue: JohnDer mentioned his move awhile back…I’d like to know how that is coming…[:S]

Good morning. It’s 63° and the humidity is at 70%. Could the gauge be broken? The high today will be 85°.

We have plenty of sunshine this morning. It’s streaming in through the window in the door and shining right on my video screen. Makes it somewhat difficult to see what I’m typing. I’m wondering if I should mow the grass today. With there being very little or no cloud cover it could make for a bad burn. Because of a side effect of one or more of my meds I sunburn quite easily unless I take certain precautions and then I’m very uncomfortable. Power went out a little while ago for just a matter of seconds. When it came back on my clock came right back with it. No need to reset it. Proof positive that the problem with it was the backup battery. My new keyboard is working out quite well. I had to print up some sticky labels to put on the keys so I can see them better as they came black with small gray/white characters. I have a hard time seeing gray. The labels are white with large black characters an dare much easier to see. Two things nice to have are the keys for ‘My Computer’ and my internet home page. I can bring up my Firefox with all ten tabs by pressing one key. No more having to click the Firefox icon and hope I don’t accidentally click something else. Time to get about the days business, whatever that may be.

Oh yeah, got a haircut yesterday. Maybe now my neighbor will quit trying to put a leash on me.

More Morning Coffee. PLEASE

I was up early to gas up MOH’s minivan and then had to do some shopping. Those who know me know I like to do that EARLY before crowds hit at Wally world.

Noticed MOH’s minivan’s steering is getting tight when turning, I asked how long that has been going on. MOH grumbled in the whiny voice “well if it is, it just started, I haven’t noticed anything”. I couldn’t see a durn thing under the hood, even under the bright lights of the gas station’s canopy, so I said we will have to check for fluid level in the afternoon when MOH is home in daylight. I know for a fact, having had 3 Dodge minivans, the power steering pumps and systems tend to wear out and leak quicker than one would like. I fear that another repair bill is coming on…I think {without diving into my repair statements, we did the power steering already on this one about 44K miles ago}.

WEll, I got laundry going and dishes half done. half done on both actually. Need to get back at it, before my back gives out.

Tomorrow I got o the grocery store to get more canned goods…they have a sale going on o canned goods…good time to buy and stock up. I wasn;t going to go to the grocery store this week, bt this is worth every penny to stock up on canned goods. Usually they have this sale in Feb. but now this time of year too.

Had the urologist yesterday, and dentist tomorrow. Urologist said things look good and my other meds may be causing problems for me. {benign Hyperplasia} OUCH. Have the dermatologist on Monday…they just called to remind me. SO many Drs. so little time…!!!

Thursday next is the furnace guy to repair the new furnace. It is out of warranty naturally and only “clicks” when we tried to turn it on. We have a different company coming out than the one we bought it form…they didn’t do something right on installing the roof j

Mornin’ everyone!

Zoe, I’ll have a short stack of Buttermilk Pancakes with real NYS Maple Syrup, a sausage patty, and keep my R&GV RR Mug full with the dark roast coffee please.

A crisp Fall like day outside here in the Finger Lakes this morning. Currently 60°F under bright sunny skies with a high this afternoon of 72°F. It is all of 67° here inside the house as I type. Tonight is the monthly meeting of the R&GV RR Museum out at the Museum. I should be riding one of the cabooses as car host again.

I may decide to run the rototiller in what used to be the garden today. Hopefully the bunny rabbit has nested somewhere else. As much as I hate the things, I still don’t like to chew them up with the tiller… Makes an awful mess and I don’t like to injure and then have to beat them to death. [|(] I hope to build a couple raised bed gardens out there before snow flies this year so I best get it started. The lawn should be mowed again also, but that may wait until tomorrow.

Later!

Morning fellas

Looks like I spoke too soon yesterday. My sister’s car locked up the thermostat. Now guess who has to replace it? You guessed it me and my dad. Found where the cotton picking thing’s at, but still got to get one and hope that it’s not going to have any hidden ‘fun’.

Afternoon Folks.

Flo, Diet Dew Pleases.

Have pretty much spent the day waiting for the VA Clinic to call me back about the infected toe. Toe is still swollen but looks like it’s normal color again. I am all so back to wearing the Stupid Break My Neck Boot! [banghead] I hate that darn boot!

Figures the toe had to act up and I am missing work again. Had a fair check coming till this happened again.

See you all later.

Ken
