Elliot´s Trackside Diner - September 2012

Don’t take big steps. In fact don’t take fast steps. I have lots of experience with those boots.

Got the grass mowed this morning and still got a burn even through my shirt! I was at Lowe’s this afternoon and spied a full set of 12" stencils. I’ve been looking for a set of those for a couple of years. So I got them and a can of starting fluid.

Bear : I use 9mm MDF.

Well it’s friday. Top today of 98F so we should see a decent storm line develop this afternoon as the CAPE is very unstable. Here’s hoping! [:)]

Evening All,

Last night after a day of feeling well my fever came back with a vengeance. By the time I got to the ER my temp was 102.7 F with a HR of 140 and O2 sats around 90-91%. After all the tests the MD says I have pneumonia and I need to be admitted. So I spent the night at the hospital getting IV antibiotics. Today my MD shows up asks what happened and looks through the blood work and chest x-ray and says the Radiologist said you don’t have pneumonia and it is probably Bronchitis. He walks out of the room and within 30 minutes they are discharging me. That was the good news.

As I am leaving the room and my wife calls me and says she has brought our son in with a overdose of alcohol and sleeping pills (possibly 40). He is doing OK physically but obviously there are mental and addiction issues present.

I ask that anyone that is willing, to say prayers for my son in the coming battle he and our family are going to face.

You got it Curt! Just when I was thinking my life sucked. []

Evening Folks

Flo, a beer to take the edge off pleases.

Well I am still waiting to hear back from my Worthless PA. Oh, that’s right they closed at 5:00 PM and it is now 6:10! [:-^] My PA’s name is Shelia Dunn, hum we know what Dun means! Should have drove my Happy Cabooses to the VA Hospital ER , but Know I did not want to wait 8 hours! [banghead]

Sue is going back for her stress test Friday at 8:00 AM. After that I have a few lose end’s to take care of and then of to the VA Hospital. I will be surprised if they don’t admit me.

Going to run the trains for a while, i feel like steam tonight so I am breaking out the work horse Y6 b.

Ken

Well what I got today is a pretty bad sunburn and it wasn’t even the hot part of the day. We’re talking morning hours here! I even got burned through my shirt. Most areas that were covered got burned a little. I was wearing denim pants so no burn there except where the fabric was pulled against my skin such as the knees. But even through a long sleeve pullover shirt and a T-shirt it baked me a light red. The exposed areas are really red. Glad I can’t feel my arms. Even my eyelids hurt. I’ve put on some Solarcaine burn relief gel and it’s helping a bit. Man, what if I’d been out there in the noon-afternoon hours? It wasn’t even 85 today. I suspect that in the coming days I’m going to be peeling like crazy! I installed some software today for my new keyboard. It was on a 3.5" floppy disk so I had to borrow my mothers USB floppy drive. She doesn’t need it. I copied the files onto a USB thumb drive so I can get at them in the future without a floppy drive.

Well that’s it for now.

Time for me to call it a night. Maybe this sunburn won’t hurt so much after a nights sleep. See y’all tomorrow.

Howdy …

Ulrich … Where are you?

Ken … I like your photos of the club layout. I would like seeing it some day. Our trip through Illinois will be mostly on I-57, and that is too far east of you. We’ll be staying west of Chicago most of the time, but will make a brief side trip to Milwaukee area.

Tod … I think I’ll be on the wrong freeway. You’re off I55 if I recall correctly.

TSF … I was wondering what your square shapes were in your posts and then suddenly I paid attention. It’s the IH logo. Is that on an old tractor there? … You’re near Joliet if I remeber. I’ll be north of you next week .

Vincent… Sounds like you have a challenging project.

Bill T… That is a unique old depot. It has a bay window on the side as well as the front. Or may be the one on the side is a “bay door”.

Curt … Sounds like a nasty fever. Take care.

JR … I’m glad you ar emaking layout progress. Maybe you can post a picture of teh swing bridge.

Lee … 15 months away from the layout? … Wow. I’d have a lot of trouble with that.

Good Morning! from Tipton IN.

Monring Coffee in the Diner

GOOD MORNING!!!

Bill has provided the date

Our grandparents and great grandparents {and perhaps parents for some of us} often spoke of the “good old days”, and times when you didn’t really need a Doctor to fix what “ailed you” unless you were dierly ill. Swamp Water and even a refreshing drink Of Coca Cola {containing Cocain until illegal to do so} could “cure you”. Here is the reason, And no wonder why!: {these are actual “OVER THE COUNTER” medicines “for what ails you” from late 1800’s through early 1900s}:

Have you ever wondered why our great grandparents all had such fond memories of their youth?

Well… I’m surprised they remembered anything at all !!!

Forget Tums & Tylenol.

Forget Aleve & Benedryl.

Look at the cool stuff they had back then!

A bottle of Bayer’s ‘Heroin’.

Galaxy: [(-D][(-D][(-D]

Good Morning!!

And on that note…I’d like to say that we are experiencing some sun, some cloud, and a bit of rain later on…high of 66F expected this afternoon.

Going to spend part of the day at our local food bank helping out…without doing heavy lifting here…

Have a good day!!

Good morning. It’s 55° with 95% humidity. It’s partly cloudy. The high will be 85°.

Well this morning I’m definitely red and it hurts to move. The plan today is to stay in and do as little possible. I may get some cleanup done on the layout later.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and eggs Benedict please. Thanks.

Barry- 7 years…[sigh].well, I guess we’ll probably be there soon. Problem is Mom had soooo much stuff and you can’t just throw stuff away without going through it first. Never know what’s in there. So we still have a basement full of that stuff and then when Brenda’s Mom passed unexpectedly so soon after my Mom’s, well, I guess it was over a year, but Brenda spent many a day and night through this period and frankly didn’t have the time to go through much, then add her Mother’s stuff to that…. We do have a mess. Oh boy do we have a mess.

Upstairs ain’t much better either with the remodel still having things in shambles (shakes head). Not like downstairs, but with Brenda in harvest and me….well….being me, the place hasn’t even been put back in order from that. We’re counting on this winter to get things back to pre turmoil. We’ll see what comes up to stop that. Never lived in such a mess. Gettin used to it. May just add some more stuff and say to heck with it[(-D].

Curt- I’m sorry to hear of your son’s issues. My prayers go out for all of you. I am glad you’re out of the hospital and it wasn’t pneumonia at least.

Jeff- Luckily, I don’t burn. Yes I get red in the beginning, but it doesn’t burn except in the shower with hot water and it is just barely a burny feeling. Then I usually don’t peel, it just turns tan. Brenda says she’s jealous of that. I remember as a kid and occasionally now with some adults(odd), they would grab my arm and say “ooo! That burn?” to which I would look at them quizzically and say….”um……nooo, why?” I have burned a time or two in the past so I do know what it feels like. Mom used to say it’s because as a baby she would put me out in the sun and I guess

My younger sister is the one who tans well. She burns once then peels and afterward is a rich golden brown. My older sister just burns. I used to tan up well with only a very light burn. Since I started taking a certain med for hypertension I get only a light tan and burn savagely. Hardly an equal trade.

Todd: Our problem just was not limited to our house. I found my BIL and sisters house to be just as bad as ours, then my other sister? OY. It was a clutter. Now my BIL is going through it with his mother passing away…and what are they doing? Moving to the country as well…with all this other stuff…it is like being a turtle carrying a whole bunch of barnacles on top…[*-)]

Good morning, Diners. Coffee, please, Chloe. I have another all day class. You can count on good weather, because I am stuck inside.

Curt, Glad you only had bronchitis. I hope you son is doing better.

Ray, How did the rototilling go? Did you get your raised beds started?

Tonight is the MR meeting. Fun times.

Sue

Good morning, I guess another coffee will do and that Eggs Benedict sounds real good!

The weather’s been great here the past few days, temps are starting to drop into high 40s at night, but 70s during the day. May still get that last touch of summer I hope.

Jeff: It sure sounded like you were going to overdo it yesterday, I guess so. You gotta do what you gotta do though. Take care of yourself today. I’ll tend to do the same, but I’m lucky the sun doesn’t bother me- must be that Italian blood, just tan like crazy.

Curt: That’s a rough couple of days, hope you’ll be feeling better today. Sorry to hear of you son’s troubles. I know how difficult these addictions can be. the physical and especially physcological problems can be so hard to overcome. Hopefully w/ all your support and early intervention your son can turn this around. A family member is dealing w/ an opiate addition- That Demon is almost impossible to get out of your head. Prayers for you and your family, a rough road ahead.

GARRY: Your trip is taking you near so many, but I guess just not close enough for any visits. I was also wondering about TSF’s signature, Maybe it’s just so large, I didn’t get the IH at first. Kinda unique anyway…

Todd and Barry: Sounds like a lot of us have the same trouble w/ years and years of “STUFF”. I dread the day I have to go there. Now w/ all 3 kids out of the house, what do I need 4 bdrm for? well other than a huge basement filled w/ 30 years of my construction stuff. It looks like Tool Time, Lumber yard and hardware store combined (trains only take up a small 16 x 20 spot). And of coarse my son has all his car parts from 2 project V8 S10s everywhere. Now I know what my Dad went through w/ 4 boys into muscle cars, dune buggies and Jeeps. Paybacks are a Bitch!!!

Ken: It just never seem to end. But glad that that toe is returning to some sort of normal. Have they pinned down just what’s wrong w/ it? Circu

Funny thing is I didn’t work all that hard yesterday. Oh well, I can take it easy for a few days.

Mornin’ everyone!

Zoe, I’ll have a short stack of Buckwheat Pancakes with local Maple Syrup form here in the Finger Lakes, a few links of breakfast sausage, and a cup (or 3) of Dark Roast Seneca Lake Blend coffee to get me started this morning. Why the Buckwheat pancakes this morning? Yesterday, I believe, was the 50th. anniversary of Birket Mills and the Village of Penn Yan, NY getting into the Guinness Book of World Records by creating the world’s largest Buckwheat Pancake for a festival in Penn Yan…

Galaxy, you forgot Mother Myrtle’s Snake Oil in your list! (W. C. Fields in “Poppy” 1936). It also made me think of the routine by Victor Borge where he tells the audience that his grandfather was an inventor, “He invented the cure for which there was no disease back in those days! Unfortunately his wife later caught the cure and died….” My MIL still had some opiate teething salve that was very popular way back when. Even used some on my oldest son when he was an infant. Yep the stuff did work well… He slept it off in a few hours! My father swore by a local Canandaigua NY remedy called “Dr. Brown’s Black Oil” which could “cure” almost anything. In fact he bought several bottles of the last case the late doctor’s wife had… You were warned on the bottle that it shouldn’t be taken internally though!

Sue, I got the garden rototilled yesterday afternoon before heading out to the museum. No little bunny rabbits appeared chopped up during the process so I guess momma bunny moved somewhere else! It will be a couple weeks probably before I start building the raised beds.

Todd and Barry, It took my sister and I clo

Mornng All,

Currently 59 with an expected high of 91 under sunny skies.

Rough couple days for my wife. She was still bleeding a bit so the sawbones decided she needed yet another test to see where. Wed. early afternoon they did an angigram. Surprise surprise, results were negative. But we think it irrated wherever she was bleeding from, because 3:00 AM Thursday she was bleeding alot. BP dropped to something like 62/42, temp was 95.7 breathing shallow. They moved her from oncology to Cardiac Intensive Care. I got the call at 4:35 AM, was at the hospital around 5:10. Oncologist does not want any more tests, gastroenteroligist wanted to do more. I had to step in and pilot this ship since there did not seem to be ayone in charge. Told everyone involved the Oncologist is in charge and anything has to be approved by him. Nurses agreed with me. Got home around 9:30 PM. She is almost stable now, so chemo will not start until she is stable.

Curt - prayers for your son and family during this difficult time.

Jeff - take care of the sunburn. Med side effects can be tough. I bruse like crazy now because of the neds I take.

Bob - My Italian blood keeps me from burning in the sun. Only got sunburned once in my life. Fell asleep in a boat with arms overhead.

**Ken -**Prayers for you foot

Prayers to all others in need.

Paul

Good Afternoon, Zoe - I’ll have a RBF, please. Thank you!

Diner’s been fairly busy lately, I see. I think it was a day or two ago I stopped by, and we already have four pages of posts (or is that five?). Might (if I’m lucky) get caught up tonight; if not, tomorrow.

Jeffrey, how’s your sunburn healing up? Did you put any aloe or such on it to help some of the burn pain?

Ray, so you’ll still have the same internet provider, but they get to peek over your shoulder (virutally…)? (Ever watch the show “Person of Interest”?[:-^] Or does your solar cell company cover (part of?) the cost of your internet?

Ken, nice photos - I’m guessing that is the layout in the K-10 hobby shop? Or is that a club layout? Rest up your feet (doctor’s orders, y’know…)[:-^] (hee, hee, hee…)

Well, about time to head for home (and laundry…).

Blessings,

Jim in Cape G.
