Elliot´s Trackside Diner - September 2012

'Morning all (or 'afternoon to our European friends). I’ll just have coffee and a donut for now.

Ulrich – I missed that part of the conversation – whose kits are you going after for the station?

Mornin’ everyone!

Zoe, I’ll have a short stack of Buckwheat pancakes w/ some NYS Dark Amber Maple Syrup, sausage, and lots of dark roast coffee in my R&GV RR Mug this morning. Thank you Ma’am!

Mobilman44, welcome aboard! As has already been said, this is a great place to sit and share a whole lot of things including all kinds of trains stuff and how life is treating you. Just be on the watch for Vinnie, as there are certain items he gets real mean about… I see those have already been mentioned so I won’t repeat them here. [:-^] Good to see you sir! And stop in often…

The electrician from Rochester Solar arrived this morning to make a few corrections to the panels on the roof. he also has to install a lightning arrestor on the DC side of the system (They had to order one and it just came in). I will also be doing the monthly reading of the meters (both electric and gas) today.

Ulrich, Christmas Cards??? In September? Oh well, my sister in Canandaigua has already bought most of her quantity of presents she will be giving this year. I, am the opposite and start to worry around December 20th. or so. [:-^][(-D]

Jeffrey, nice start on the Elevator! Great idea for keeping the lines exactly straight which gives me an idea for the bands I have been trying to oput on the water tower at the power station. Thanks!

I have a large list of items I should get done today, so I best get moving. Have a great day!

Morning All,

Currently 54 with an expected high of 84 under mostly sunny skies.

[#welcome] Mobileman [#welcome] As one of the newer diners here I can tell you that this a really nice place to sit and chat while having a nice meal, or just some coffee. Very friendly people here as well.

I think all the stress of what has been going on with my wife for the past two plus months caught up with me yesterday. Stomach was doing flip flops all day. Did not go to work or to the hospital. Feel a bit better today. Wife is on second full day of round two of chemo treatment, and all is well she says. Blood counts are good, and she can start on a liquid diet today. And no Ken, that does not mean [B] lol.

Tried to order some Arizona Rock and Mineral ballast from Caboose hobbies yesterday. The color and size I wanted they were out of, so I need to try someplace else.

Today is my regular day off, so if stomach feels better I will go visit my wife and maybe do some layout work.

Prayers to all in need.

Paul

Ray - that early? I did my Christmas shopping always on the 24th [:-^]

Dan - I need typical 1890´s style brick railroad buildings, as you find them everywhere in northern Germany. Most of the kits available here follow southern German prototype, which is out of place here. There is one business making laser-cut card kits, but they are just outrageously expensive. Need to look for a regular plastic kit, which fits my wallet.

Ulrich – you might end up having to scratchbuild (or kitbash) something … I can’t think of any manufacturers that make European-prototype stuff outside the sources you’ve probably already checked (Faller, Heljan, Trix, Marklin, etc).

Is the laser-cut kit cardstock (i.e. paper), or plywood?

It´s plain card stock, but about 400 pieces of it.

In the meantime, I found a suitable kit. It is made by Auhagen, which is hardly known in the US, as they follow European (mainly German) prototype only. Their industrial structures might be of interest, though.

The station building actually pretty much looks like the one in my home town.

With a dab of paint and some weathering, i think it´ll look equally well ( at a quarter of the price for both the depot and the freight shed).

Work on the grain elevator got put on hold this morning. My father needed me to help him lift my mothers power chair into the back of his truck. So got that done then went to the nursing home with him as it was going to take both of us to unload it there. We got it unloaded and I drove it to my mothers room. I tested the speed setting on it on the way. A little below medium should be as fast as she needs to go. The fastest I had it up was 3/4’s and the vertical mortar lines in the cinder block walls of the hall all disappeared and residents standing in the hall went by like a picket fence. Yeah, she definitely won’t need that setting. Anyway, I showed her how to operate it, how to hook up the charger, etc.

Now, on the grain elevator project, I have half of the silos done with what I call ‘roof plugs’ and I’m preparing to do the other half. The first part of that is to rough up the inside of one end of the with some sandpaper. I then place three strips of one inch masking tape across that end so they overlap a bit. I then put a fourth strip going across those at a ninety degree angle. It’s not really needed but I feel better knowing it’s there. Next I stand them taped end down on the kitchen counter and pour plaster into them to a depth of one inch then let them stand a couple of hours. I then pour a little glue in and let that set. Removing the tape reveals a fairly smooth plaster plug. Later I’ll cover the top with some tissue and glue. That give the glue something to stick to later when I add the gallery (structure on top of the silos). Here’s one I did earlier on a piece of scrap pipe to test the concept.

End taped:

End after plaster set and tape removed:

Hi all,

Im Dennis and Im new here to the diner.

Here in Lancaster county PA it is in the mid 70`s and lookin like its gona rain…

…got the day off from my track worker job at East Penn Railroad due to the fact we will be working thru the weekend…ran some erons earlier and now I think I`ll work on the layout for a while.

HOLY MOLY LEE!!! THANK YOU MOST MUCH for your recommendation!!! The Furminator just showed up in the mail opened it up, we went outside and man-o-man did the fur fly!!! Neighbors can’t see out of their windows for the fur. AND, as a big bonus, she actually LIKES being brushed with it!!!

Next I try it on the dog.[:-^]

Mobileman44- Big hearty welcome to you sir! I’ve seen you around the forums. Glad you stopped in and hope you stay aound. No this place isn’t everyones cup of tea, but we like it and welcome who ever wishes to show up. Good thing about here is, if you have a problem, you will get help without the “looks horrible” comments. Those in the know genuinely want to help others enjoy the hobby as much as they do and do NOT have a better than thou attitude. If someone stops in and gets abit brash, and it does happen from time to time, we just ignore them and they usually just move on down the tracks.

[#welcome] Dennis I hope you enjoy the diner.Real nice folks here.

I just ordered 6 bags of ballast from Arizona Rock and Mineral, should be enough to last a little while, unless I spill a lot of it on the floor.

Paul

Hello Dennis. [#welcome] to the diner. We have many nice people here. As for myself I’m busy working on a scratchbuilding project at the moment. Everything’s going well so far.

Work on the elevator is progressing. At this time the plaster and glue and setting in the last of the silos. The next step will be to sand them to take off the smooth plastic appearance and give it the look and feel of concrete. I’ve already done this on the scrap tube I’m using to test my concepts. It has a nice looking texture of concrete. Later I’ll paint it and see what it looks like.

Well…got a call from my boss at 4PM said we will be off tomorrow too…he can`t get everything together we need for the weekend and also another chance of bad weather too…so I guess I just have to keep working on the layout.

[swg][yeah]

Hey, welcome Mobleman 44

You’ve been to my neck of the woods huh? Mind if I ask where you worked in Joliet?

I’ve been looking at some of the paint colors I have and found one I like. It’s a mis-tint satin latex I picked up from Lowe’s called ‘Silver Bells’. At this point the test tube is the only one that’s painted.

Looks good Jeff,

Have you thought about using that textured spray paint to give it some roughness? then maybe going over it with a wet sandpaper to smooth it down a bit before adding your final color of grey paint?

Evening, Chloe, I’ll just have a Santa Fe mug of coffee and a hot fudge brownie sundae, please (nothing heavy…[:-^] Thanks!

First, my apologies for missing wishing you a Happy Birthday, Galaxy! [^] I hope it was a good one, and that you got lots of PM’s… [;)] I guess you must’ve had a good time on your birthday, since you’re resting up today, eh? [:-^]

Ray, from your descriptions of the museums’ goings-on, if I ever got up that way, I’d definitely find out if the trains were gonna be running. [tup]

Stan (B&O1952), great pics of the Berkshires (HEY, DUKE! Wake up!!) you have there. [bow] (Sorry for yelling, but we have one of the Diners who dozes a bit in the back of the Diner, but he perks up when Berkshires are mentioned, so I didn’t want him to miss your photos.) [;)]

Jeff, how are you feeling today/tonight? Hopefully better than you were on Monday. Also, did you put a speed governor on your mother’s wheelchair? She might try to make a break for the exit on 3/4 speed (or more)…[:O][oops]

(Oh,not that I’m a person who watches a certain Monday night sport, but I did hear this huge collective groan for some reason that evening. I don’t think I’ll ask anything about what THAT was…)

Todd - and that little bitty linoleum job started how long ago? [oops][:-^] Never mind, I probably shouldn’t ask…

Barry, that is one funny cat/dog/wh

No. She’s on her honor. And candid camera!

Some other colors I’m toying with. Anything but white! What do you think?

Thanks,

I actually do have a layout I started in November 2007…it is a modified version of the "Wawbeek & Sunmount Ry…6’ x 14’ with a 2’ x 6’ extension in the process of being built…you can see some pics in the “Layouts & Layout building” thread under my layout and Layout Extension.

I spent 8 months in the backshop of the Strasburg RR…but left there in Feb. 2011…worked at a truck builder for 16 months and left there to go to the East Penn RR and I`ve been there for 7 weeks now.

Here is a link for the railroad…http://www.eastpennrr.com/

Hey CAPEJim

If you were referring to me mentioning CAPE in my last post I was referring to the whether term “Convective Available Potential Energy” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convective_available_potential_energy

Altough we do have many capes in Queensland… Cape York, Cape Tribulation… but these are 1400km from me! The nearest cape to me is “Cape Moreton” is about 50km north of me on Moreton Island, Cape Moreton is the location for the oldest light house in Queensland with it being built in 1857, interestingly the only light house built by New South Wales before Queensland became it’s own state. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Moreton_Light

There you go, a short geography and history lesson [:)]
