Elliot´s Trackside Diner - September 2012

Jeff for what it is worth, I like the color on the far right. That is my [2c] worth.

Paul

Welcome Dennis! Since Mobilman44 stopped in and we just filled him in on the place, and I hope he didn’t think we were too overboard, just kinda nose through what we talked about.

We don’t always list the does and don’ts if you will, but from time to time it’s god to keep them out there. So ever so often when someone stops in for the first time some of us just run them past just to make sure no little issues. Kinda like a 100th customer wins sorta thing.[(-D]

I wish I could find that description from years ago that told all about the diner, how it worked and the employee schedule (calling Flo, Zoe dosn’t always go over well. Don’t ask me how I know [B)] ) It got lost in the great crash of 2010. I know I had printed it out too, but I put it someplace where I could find it and now I don’t remember where that was.

HEY guess what? No Willie Nelson didn’t stop by, but I did go down to the trainroom today[:D]. Stood there and thought…“[:(]what a mess” Pulled a couple spider webs away and asked myself where in the world did all those little wood chips came from! Then I looked up and remembered. Wood floor staples. When I blew the staples into the floor it sent THOUSANDS of little wood chips raining down on Toddland (of which I’m king). No roof damage reported so it doesn’t appear I have to make an insurance agents office…yet.

Time for me to call it a night. You all know by now what I’ve been up to today so I won’t waste your time and mine with a recap. The grain elevator project is starting to come together and is quite honestly one of the most ambitious projects I’ve undertaken in many years and is the first scratch build I’ve dared to tackle since 2003. I’m hoping it’ll turn out as good as much of my past work did but I was much more physically able then. See y’all tomorrow.

Goooooooooooooooood Evening, plate of cheeseburgers, plate of fries, bucket of 7-Up please 'n thank-you…Rerun and I will leave the roast beef for JIM from Missouri [^o)]

[#welcome] to the new guys!

JEFF: THAT elevator looks to be coming along good! [bow] Great idea, using plaster to cap the end. As for paint choice, while I usually go “right” (some would argue I go “far right”), this time I’m gonna go far left. Then again, I’ve got THAT pesky little prototype hang-up going for me. THAT said, there’s probably an elevator somewhere painted green and I’ll bet some Cargill decals would look right at home on it.

TODD: So tell me, how did you manage to get Brenda out back for a grooming???[(-D]

Making smooth plastic look like concrete: I’ve had to use quite a bit of Squadron Putty (white) on my elevator, “Elevator G,” so had the bright idea to use coarse sandpaper to not only smooth the many joints (especially on Walthers’ silos), but also to rough-up the surface and make it look more concrete-ish. Well (still down, toads have packed up and moved away), after two coats of Poly Scale “aged concrete,” you’d never know I did THAT. Oh well. Can’t lose if you don’t play right? At least where I filled-in windows (on the main structure), and filled gaps and joints, it’s nice and smooth.

Here’s a very quick “grab shot” of the main structure so far, lots left to do here.

I can’t wait to see JEFF’s creation.

Have a good night and a better tomorrow everybody!

Chris (in Iowa)

Evening Dinners

Yes Flo, I know I am all wise the person in the dinner. Thank You For The Beer!

Welcome Dennis and Mobilman44 to the dinner. I will send you my address for the $15.00 a month membership dues. I take Visa, MasterCard or rolling stock as payment. [(-D] I hope you know I am kidding, but if you want to send the money anyway I will take it!

Well I am off Thursday! [sigh] Reason for the long faces you ask?

1 Have to call BoS (for the new folks BoS is Bank of America or as we know them here at the dinner Bank of Stupid) Fighting with them to keep my house I have lived in for 20 years. Every person I talk to tells me something different. [banghead]

2 Have to pick up my daughter’s cars for brakes and a oil change. Will be doing the brakes and oil change at a friends shop. Don’t get me started as to why I am not doing them at the shop I work at! She want’s it done in a hour? Does not understand that Bob is going to fit us in when there is a rack vacant.

By the way, she has not changed her oil for over a year now! We got in a fight over that!

3 Have to run the wife around for her stuff.

4 Cut the front and rear grass.

5 Fix the water-heater. Long story there.

6 Go to the bank and other stuff.

I am off my [soapbox] for now.

Ken

[#welcome] To all the newcomers here!!

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and two eggs over medium, bacon, hashbrowns and a couple biscuits please. Oh and some of that blackberry jam thank you.

Oh, G musta been busy yesterday and tired this morning. No trivia posted for breakfast rading.

Partly sunny, with a high near 74.

Ken- Daughter story sounds oh so familiar. Mine was/is same way. Just waaaaay to busy to wait for someone who won’t drop what they’re doing to do it on her schedule. I stopped doing it. She can explain to the guys at Jiffy lube why she should be catered to and bumped in line because she is the only person in the world who has kids and she just doesn’t have time to wait for the other people. She’s getting better. The boy now, he don’t know what a wrench is, but he got him a Cadillac and he pulls that thing into the place every 3500 or 3 or 4 months for the oil change and checks on every little noise the thing makes. Sometimes a bit anal if you ask me, but hey, he learned from his mistakes and now he has a real decent car, he’s gonna take care of it. Besides with three kids he needs reliable transportation. I hope the girl learns as well.

Hope **Lee’**s feeling better. Not sure what creeping crud is. Might could be some weed he’s dealing with in the yard too.[^o)] Never thought of that.

Well, Brenda wanted to go to Red Lobster last night for all you can eat shrimp[:^)]. I don’t know, maybe it’s me, but I’ve never had a good meal there. Not bad, just not……good. Last night was no different. The pasta for the Some Kinda Shrimp and Alfredo with a Funny Wang Taste over pasta, was over done and pastey, The, oh shoot. What’s that stuff called? I say it all the time, Brenda’s favorite. Really? If I wasn’t trying to…., Shrimp Scampi! That’s it. The shrimp was over done and mealy and the second one was a bit better, but still over done. Brenda’s was better

Lunchtime!

Flo, a Barry-sized burger, fries and an RBF, please!

Barry - thanks for passing that cold along. Not only that my head is clogged, I also got a terrible toothache! Need to see the dentist soon - I hope I get an appointment next week. I will have Petra call him - she is his pet patient [:-,]

I went to our city hall today to pick up my new ID card - the old one will expire in a couple of weeks. That new card cost me 50 $, as there is a chip in them containing biometric data. A new passport, which is essentially the same thing, but only has some pages for visas, will cost 100 $ - too much for me. Once my old one has expired, I will not be able to travel outside of Europe any longer - [sigh]

Great to see some new faces in this places, but I am also missing some of the old ones.

Have a splendid day!

Good Morning All,

62F and occasional showers today high around 68F. No layout time again but I did get my new car computer dash data harnesses “pinned out” and one installed and functioning ready for next week and VIR. Doing wiring stuff is not that hard as I get the harnesses made to my design and I just need to adapt what was interperted incorrectly or fix connectors that are wrong. Blah, blah…

From there we deal with a 30’s Bentley today fixing the toe link on the front axel and some general cleaning/maintainence.

Did do some more over the weekend with the swing bridge on the layout. I’ll try to get some pics this weekend though I’m still unsure about cutting the rails to make it active when I can still easily duck under it for now.

My prayers for those ailing and in need. Ulrich, good to see you back again on a regular basis. Hope things finally turn for the better for you.

Jeff, did you ever figure out what was the story with your Moms’ chair batteries and the chager? Was it a low cut on the charger or were the batteries just expired from use? Nosey peoplewant to know. On a not related subject, my layout as of last weekend has a New Haven I-5 and three Pullman passenger cars on it as I check more recent trackwork. I think I have a gauge problem on one bridge as it seems tight (and that track is glued down right on the integral cross ties. Should be fun to fix).

Time to pick up tools and be useful. CUL, J.R.

Good morning everyone ('afternoon Ulrich). Just stopping in to top off my to-go mug today (well, for now anyway)…

Everyone’s a comedian [%-)].

That is just it…he is joking.[:D]…by the way…another N scaler here as well…[swg]

They had most definitely expired. One would charge to only four volts and a few amps. The other one was totally toasted. It couldn’t even light a flashlight bulb!

Oh I know … [:)] …

even HO scale has a lot of “invisible” stuff when compared to the 1:1 equipment I work on, so there [:P]

On the upside, Tichy has some kits yet (not as many as I’d like, but we’ll have to make do with what is available).

Dan - your eyes must be lot younger than mine. I am still into N scale, but I am afraid I will have to go back (grow up?) to HO scale again, as my vision is left a little impaired after my recent heart issues. If I had the space and the funds - I´d even go up to O scale (!) - not the Hi-Rail stuff, but true scale. Even better would be scale 1 - with realistic sound and smoke - just watch this little video!

Enjoy the sights and sounds!

At about 3,800 $ a piece, aren´t those locos a bargain?

Good morning. It’s 69° with 97% humidity. It’ll be partly cloudy with a high of 88°.

Well as far as the color selection for the silos goes I still haven’t made up my mind. So far there’s been at least one vote each color. There was even a vote for the color (silver bells) on the test piece. It’s a grayish color like concrete. So far at two votes each the favorites seem to be #1 (far left) stone gray and #4 the grayish brown.

1 Stone gray ******* (far left)

2 Yellow *

3 Dark green *

4 Light brown ***

5 Dark smoke gray * (far right)

6 Silver bells (test color) *

Today I’ll be rough sanding the silos to get them ready for painting. I sanded a couple last night and I like the look of them. I’m using a P150 sanding cloth. I’ll also hit them with the sanding drum on the Dremel. I used that on the test piece yesterday and it had a somewhat rough texture like old concrete. After all I don’t want it looking brand new. And I still have to pick a color.

Good morning, Diners. I seem to be getting a late start this morning. Coffee, Coffee, Coffee!

Jeffrey, I vote for the lightest color that you have in earth tones. Was your test color almost white?

I plan to work outside this morning. Things are so dry around here. I am waiting for the other shoe to drop. Once it starts raining, it won’t quit.[um]

Later, Sue

This is the test color.
