On the 8/9 the non-cab “B” unit, could this unit be moved independently, if so, how was it controlled???
SAL’s B units had a hostler’s control at one end and had a small porthole window to see out. Had an operating bell
IO think the unmion Pacific also had hostler controls on one end
That’s something I never knew before…interiesting.
There was a coal mine in [Pennsylvania?] that had a F7B that they made their mine switcher by putting a window in the end of the unit, and sticking controls in it. I assume this might have utilized hostler controls?

I have seen a number of photos, some in old Trains and MR issues, of E and F ‘B’ units being operated by a hostler. The portal window could be opened so the hostler could have more visibility. A light (often called a backup light) was mounted over or beside the door
wgnrr, I remember seeing a picture of the mine you are referring to. The picture was in a MR issue from the 80s in the Bull Session and I’m thinking there was a Southern RY Geep on the cover. The F7B was an old Clinchfield unit. I’m thinking the line was along the Clinchfield tracks and they didn’t look to have that much track but there was a grade.
