EMD Demonstrator !! My real life close look (Sort of)

Tonite while on my way home I decided to go by the Wheeling & Lake Erie yard in Akron, Ohio, Just to see what was happening not that I would see much it was 2 am, But I did see stuff. The first thing I spotted was the Rail Grinder sitting in the yard looking like a small city all lit up but not working. Then I drove down the road a little bit and went up a side street that crosses the main into the yard and there was a train comming so I waited and, what did I see you ask? My first ever spotting of an EMD demonstrator it was looking a little rough from what my head lights could show. but the lighted sign on the nose that had the GM was pretty cool,My question is are there painted up versions like this for other manufactures like GE. And also is there some sort of roster posted somewhere that list all these demo units?

I have never seen one, but they are out there. Have a look at the locomotive on GE’s Rail page, to see different pictures reload the page.

Ericsp,

I have seen the GE page and have been total smitten with that GEVO. Overland is doing them with there tower55 line I might have to save my pennies and buy one. I was rather surprised to see a demo on the W&LE and this unit looked a little rough the numbers on the side were really worn away but man was it blue. I wish I could have gotten a photo of it. I couldnt even tell what model it was.

is this what you saw.

W&LE has 6 units in this paint scheme. It’s a SD40-2 in emd lease schemes. Someone should make onee of these.

Hey George I wondering if you would see this Yes that actually is the one I saw this morning. Where did find the photo and the information at??? I have a SD40-2 in Norfolk Southern paint right now but I am very tempted to rectify that now that I have seen the enging in person. The engineer spotted me sitting there gawking and actually waved I was sitting at Seiberling road which the road is closed at the tracks looks like there doing the crossing.

I have an Athearn Blue Box dummy of an EMD GP40-2, its number 6382 and the GM logo is a little bit smaller.

TA462 do you know if it is still in prodution??

I’m not sure but I doubt it.

Check out this link…that is if your into Ebay.

I think that EMD is out of the locomotive leasing business now. They formed at joint venture with GATX called Locomotive Leasing Partners (LLPX). Last December GATX bought out EMD’s share of the company.

If you click on EMD’s leasing option under the “Services” option on the menu on the left, it takes you to GATX’s page. So that locomotive you saw is probably owned by GATX.

Polizi- Here’s the site I found the picture from. IN the roster section it has a pic of every engine in their small roster. http://www.wle.railfan.net/

I drove by the yard this evening and saw the rail grinder. It was an impressive site. They had it parked in their repair shop and it was sticking out on each end. It would be nice seeing it in action.

Ericsp- You are correct. The W&LE has 6 units in EMD lease paint and 3 in GATX paint. That’s one thing I love about the W&LE is that you can find a EMD lease unit, W&LE unit and a Rio Grande Tunnel moter all on the same train. Though I wi***hey were easier to photograph.
Andrew

After seeing those SD40T-2s in DRGW paint, I think I will have to go there.

George,

Thank you for the info I now have some good ideas for my upgrade to the EMD unit. How are things down at MP 122?

TA thanks for the heads up on the ebay stuff…

Ericsp. Those units are really easy to find around me I can get close ups of them on occasion as they delivery wheat to a flour mill in jent ohio.
