EMD F Unit Part Identification

Can anyone help me identify what part this is on an F unit diesel? On some f unit diesels on the front of the nose and to the left of the light there is a square receptacle what is this? I want to detail a unit and I don’t know what it is to attempt to order a part to add it. Anyone know who makes the part?

John,

Is this what you are reffering too:

Looks to me, like MU receptacles for running, two A-units, nose to nose. Not all EMD F’s have them. I guess it depends on the Railroad that uses them. Actually I never saw them, in kits, or RTR.
Frank

EDIT: Yes they are for MU. Click on pic. for info.

Sounds like an after market MU Recepticle. Go to Walthers web site and look at the Details West/Detail Associates super detail parts - Search on MU Stand

Jim

CN F units had them recessed behind a square hatch …

Here’s a shot showing the door open with the MU receptacle behind …

Mark.

I think BLMA Makes MU covers, I bought an N scale F unit detailing kit do they make one in HO? just checked, they do not.

hmmmm, this is odd Here’s a BN(ex SP&S) F7. THe MU Hatch is different from the previous two designs? Did EMD do them different for each road?

The MU hatch on BN 9758 is the ‘as delivered’ cover that had the actual MU receptical behind it. Many railroad did not order MU on the nose of their F units, but later added it. There are many variations of these ‘shops built’ modifications as can be seen in some of the above pictures.

Ah Ok, That’d make sense. There’s a couple photos in Ed Austin’s SP&S book where one of the F7’s has the hatch up and is connected to the unit in front of it. Thanks for the info Jim!
