Greetings from Port Townsend.

Spent considerable time trying to find out precisely what the suffix “PH” and “PHI” designate, as applied to the EMD passenger locomotives, model F59.

Hi (or I (cap) =

Finally, how can one tell the difference VISUALLY?

Thanks for your assistance,

Visual difference is easy:

F59PH: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1396612

F59PHI: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1460087

The “I” stands for isolated cab.

F = Full Cowl Carbody

59 = 12N710G3A diesel (12 cylinder)

P = Passenger

H = Headend Power

I = Isolated Cab (cab rest on rubber isolation bushings)

Diesel Era Magazine May/June 2010 issue and July/August 2010 issue Volume 21 Number 3, 4 has published a great stories about the EMD F59 concept and the history of the program. I think its going to open your eyes about the history of the concept how it was change to later models.
