Emd model 40

can anyone redirect me to a site that has a emd model 40 for sale

Since the EMD Model 40 doesn’tparticularly interest me, I can’t give you specifics. But I will give you some of what I do to find a model I am interested in.

First is to ascertain the model’s production status. Has it been recently produced? Are dealers in current production items likely to still have some stock?

If yes, life is good. First, check eBay for the going price (final price on auctions). This gives an idea of what an LHS or e-tailer should be asking price-wise. I do not buy current production from eBay - but that’s me. Then start calling hobby shops and on-line discounters to find who has it. When I call an LHS (from ads in MR or similar), I am prepared to buy on the spot if they have it in stock at something close to the going price. Most of the better LHS will be glad to take a phone order with credit card and ship the item to you. I have manufacturers and Walters catalog numbers at hand when I ask them to check their stock. And I call at non-peak hours. And thank them if the stock check was unsuccessful.

If searching for out of production items (OOP), often I will actually buy off eBay. But first, I give the large dumping grounds for manufacturer’s unsold inventory (Train World and the like) a call - again with specific model numbers in hand. Second place to try is the deep stocking hobby shops (of the type of items I buy). Certain hobby shops stock logging equipment in depth, others do narrow gauge, and so on. At these shops, I expect to pay full retail if they have the item in stock.

If buying from eBay, I carefully check the seller’s feedback - especially any negative feedback. I’m particularly looking for patterns in the feedback in sales of train items, not just isolated incidents. And I try to buy from eBay in the summer when competition from other buyers is less, and the prices tend to be lower.

my thoughts, your choices

I would love to help, but I am confused.

I am familiar with these 40’s;

SD 40 (& dash 2, 3’s)

GP 40 (& dash 2, 3’s)

F40

Any of the above are manufactured by great companies, Kato, Atlas, Athearn, & more. All are good but may need additional detailing, like lift rings, mu hoses, etc.

Please tell us what you are looking for & many will be able to help & let you know what to expect with the model & what can be done.

Good luck,

Chad,

Here’s what he’s looking for.

I have a couple of them doubleheaded. They work very well on DC. They were produced by Roundhouse a few years back. Not sure if they are still in production.

Do a Google search. If one is around, you might find it.

Ah, I wondered if it was something I was not familliar with, & you win. I don’t have anything like those, they are neat though. I like critters like the Grandt Line Switchers & what not.

Please let us know when you find them & how you like them, they look nice. Sorry I could not help out more…

Long out of production. No plans of late for a re release. You will pay a premium for these, even used (been searching for more for myself).

I just got off the phone with my local and he informed me that these are no longer in production–of course Roundhouse was a trademark of MDC which is now under Horizon Hobbies’ roof. Surprisingly, he informed me, they sold pretty well and he probably had two or three dozen pass through the store when they were in production–circa 2005?–but he no longer has any in stock.

Considering the fact that these have been out of production for about five years it looks like ebay is going to probably be your best bet.

I can’t remember the name but there is somebody who buys estates and occasionally posts an advertisement on the right column of the forum; if someone can come up with a name you might consider contacting them or a similiar company which might advertise in the hobby press.

An estate buyer that advertises is WWW.brasstrains.com or the store front is Dan’s Train depot in Ocala, Florida.

If he doesn’t have it he probably knows where it might be.

Johnboy out…

This hobby shop has one in stock, I look at it all the time. Give them a call, they don’t sell online, but they would most likely ship it to you, nice people.
