Engineer, passengers thread that had been locked

Just looked it up - and that is pretty funny. [swg]

And the subsequent discussion about the rightness / wrongness of what they done - including Ed’s conceding that yes, he’d gotten chewed on by the risk manager afterwards, and some other aspects, too - and the back-and-forth between about half a dozen members - is pretty interesting. In a way, that story has a lot of elements in common with this thread.

I don’t know that I’d get any thanks from the moderators for posting the direct link to the thread or any more details that would identify it - but you can find it with a fairly simple search if you know what you’re doing - I’ll just leave it at that.

No, my understanding is that wabash1 is arguing for position #2, although - at the risk of seeming to ‘put words in his mouth’ - his version of position #2 seems to be more along the following lines:

  1. Even though it is against company rules, and against the law to allow an unauthorized

OK, wabash1, I appreciate the quick correction/ clarification. [tup] Now I understand your position a lot better. Sorry that I misunderstood and wrote it up wrong - as I said, I didn’t want to be putting words in your mouth - but I’m glad that you took the time to post again to straighten it out.

Hang in there, good buddy, and take care not to get too worked up about any of this. You’re doing just fine here. [8D]

I was beginning to think there, just for a little while that the moderators were going to try and save me from attempting all sorts of crazy things where I’d lose my mind and then tell the large North American carrier I work for, oh, well, some “foamer” in TRAINS general discussion forum said it’d work, said it was ok.

There was a time that I’d let people in the cab, I remember the first cab ride I had was in a N&W Geep when I was about 14. I know, much to my regret, that I can never return the favor forward, as it were.

Wabash, I knew exactly what you were saying.

I look at it this way:

If I have the responsibility for running, or managing a piece of equipment that I have been trained to operate, I will not, under any circumstances, allow anyone who is untrained, uncertified, or untested in the operation of said equipment, anywhere near the controls for that equipment. It’s basic common sense, as far as I am concerned.

There really isn’t anything else to say…To let someone operate something they have no business operating is courting disaster. Even if something happens that is beyond the control of those at the controls, and causes an accident, the fact that the person at the controls at the time of the incident had no business being there, in some people’s minds, puts the blame on the operator, regardless of the circumstances…

My Grandpa lived in Painsville, Ohio, when he was young (under 18, can’t remember the exact age) he was taking photos of the NYC and the crew of a steam train let him ride in the cab taking photos for a few miles, He still has the photos.

But now you get any where near the train and somebody is giving you gureff , ironically they have all these rules in place: No unauthorized persons in the cab, what is allowed in the cab, what your allowed to be doing other than operating the train (virtually nothing), mandatory use of Alerters, e.t.c… We still manage to have about the same number if not ever few years more train major train incidents then a while ago. It’s a shame since there is more that can be done to prevent an crew from running a red then plowing head on into a freight train. One day

Did you ever miss Minneapolis by 150 miles?

That would get you the same thing it got those pilots:SUSPENDED!!!
