Engines with sound and no DCC: some use possible??

More and more engines are offered with sound, first steam and lately also diesel ones. While the feature is fully enjoyed with DCC, having only a ‘traditional’ DC pack (and no sidekick’, or other addition) allow me to enjoy some of the sounds? At least a basic tchuff tchuff or something similar? And what should I hear from a diesel? The engine idling or also increasing rpm?

Has someone experience with that? I am thinking to buy the new GP7 from Proto2000 in IC colors…. and it is a ca 190$ investment!
I only have traditional european (Roco) power packs. The offered ‘add ons’ on the market are not compatible (110V against 220V )

thank you for any hint

The QSI® equipped locomotives, offered by BLI, Atlas and P2K work fine on DC.

The Sidekick; or better yet the “Quantum Engineer™” offered by Atlas http://www.atlasrr.com/ are wired between the power pack and the rails, with not direct connection to the wall. Thus the 110/220 thing does not enter into the picture.

My new BLI SD40-2 operates as expected on DCC. It comes with an instruction book that explains how to use the horn and bell if operated on a DC layout. Basically after starting the locomotive and it is rolling instantanious switching the power direction switch activates the horn or bell depending on the duration. The way you change direction is to come to a full stop. Then move the direction switch and open the throttle again.

It sounds god…I will give a try, and possibly buy the Quantum Engineer

Thank you for the informations!
