mdbprr you said to put a ernst transmission in a athearn engine I have several athearn engines where do you find these critters any special models for different engines and last but not least how many pennies do they cost [:)]
You can try the LHS, online or Ebay. They should run in the 7-9 dollar range per kit. There are four or five applications…four axle, six axle, SD40-2 truc…etc. They are simple to install.
I’ve installed the 4 axle, 6 axle, SD40-2 and RDC ones before. They are quite simple to install as dharman said.
The 4 and 6 axle ones I installed were in older Athearn locos with the outside bearings. Is there a special kit for the inside bearing trucks or do you modify the axle gear?
They might still make one for the Athearn 4 wheel rocket called the Hustler which has always been rubber band drive in the finest Athearn tradition. It’s a tight fit but cuts the 180mph orig speed down to something far more realistic. I put one in an Athearn RDC, but never got it sorted out. Think you’ll find them in Walthers catalog .
I have one for the Hustler. It is designed for the newer ones with the blunt end axles and idler pulleys. All the Hustlers I have are the old ones with the needle point axles.
I had to do a little modifying when I put the kit into my RDC. The kit is designed for the newer version with the motor that uses the rubber mounts. Mine is the earlier version with the Hi-F motor. I installed a can motor and fabricated my own driveshaft.

oh does this fix the famous athearn growl thanks atsf1
No but it makes them run slower and pull well.
Yes; it make it LOUDER and easier for you to hear.
I’ve had a gp 40-2 with Ernst gears just to experment with.Took them out after a while,I thought loco ran to slow as i’am high speed runner. But I have a weighted SD-9 that stays in my yard with Ernst gears that works perfect, even the growl sounds great.[8D]
