Ex-ATSF Baggage-dorms w/"roof bonnets"

From the ATSF Railway, Amtrak inherited a series of fluted stainless steel baggage dorm cars that had a unique design. At one end of each car was a stainless steel “bonnet,” one which transitioned the roof line of what was a conventional baggage car to the roofline of a Santa Fe Hi-level coach.

Two days ago I saw some very recent photographs taken in New Mexico of Amtrak nos. 3 and 4, and none of those exposures featured those unique baggage dorms.

QUESTION: Have those cars been retired, or are they assigned to other Amtrak schedules?

The baggage-dorms which were initially assigned to the “El Capitan” have been retired. The other ATSF trains in the pre-Amtrak era that were also equipped with hi-level coaches did not have similar transition cars.

As of two weeks ago, there were at least two sitting at Beech Grove sitting in the storage tracks with other Amjunk.
