F45 Availability Dates

Folks,

How long was the F45 in the EMD catalog for orders?

Thanks!

interesting question

As near as I can tell, from “The Contemporary Diesel Spotter’s Guide”
(2000 edition); the F45 was produced between June 1968,through May of 1971.

I have to question whether or not the F45 was actually ever in EMD’s catalog or rather was a customized special order unit built to order for specific roads such as AT&SF and NP (these are the only roads ever to order the model while Milwaukee Road also ordered sister model FP45).

F45s were built for AT&SF, GN, and BN in that order. NP never had any EMD Cowl units. [;)]

Were not there any for Milwaukee Road?

Dominique

Milwaukee Road had the FP45, no F45s.

Santa Fe had both F45s and FP45s.

Right you are, my friend, I really meant GN. Now, can anybody say with authority if the F45 and/or FP45 were actually in EMD’s catalog or were really special order units.

Looking at the issue from the other end, how many are still left in service?? NYSW has its 3636 back up and running. Feel free to correct me, but I think that one was BN 6644.

It would be difficult to argue that it was not a catalouged model since it was built for three different customers including a passenger version.[2c] As always ENJOY

Basically a modified SD45 with a streamlined carbody on it.

There were no more after 1971. EMD went into its “Dash 2” phase in 1972, which spurred quite a bit of buying from Class 1 railroads. However, while there were some orders placed for SD45-2’s in the years that followed, no more 20 cylinder F45 or FP45 cowls were ordered.

We did see the SDP40f and F40C later, but those units were based on completely different platforms.
