trainworld has them on sale and i’m curious what’s the difference. basics if you can please. thanks for sharing.
The FA2 is slightly longer. They also gained an extra 100 hp in the upgrade.
The large vent on the top-rear of the FA-1 is very close to the back. On the FA-2, it’s farther forward.
Also, the fuel tanks are quite different. The FA-2’s had a very square looking tank, while the FA-1’s tank was more…well, streamlined I guess is the right term.
BTW, WRT to the radiator shutters, on the FA-1’s, they were almost flush with the carbody sides and a touch longer. On the FA-2’s, they were deeper into the carbody and a touch shorter.
The reason why FA-2’s were longer was for the addition of a steam generator set if ordered. IIRC, most roads just used them for freight and didn’t get the steam gen. anyways. I know the NH’s FB-2’s had a concrete weight instead of a steam gen. (the NH had 30 FA-1’s, 15 FB-1’s, and 5 FB-2’s).

Or, you can just look at this photo here:

Note that the two A-units are FA-1’s, while the B-unit is an FB-2. Look at how much the radiator shutters are recessed on the B-unit compared to the A’s.
