Fate of Norfolk Southern GP35s?

Is there any list of retirement or sale date of Norfolk Southern GP35s? They had a bunch at their merger, former Southern and former N&W. I think they also picked some up from Conrail (ex PRR)

Does anyone know of a listing of the fate of these engines? When did most of thme get sold, or scrapped? I know NS only has one GP35 in current service.

Thanks!

D.

What is the number on the last remaining GP35? I can’t seem to find anything on it.

I don’t know about the GP35s but some former NS (ex Southern and NW) high hood GP30s ended up being rebuilt into GP39Es in the early 90s for BN. Their high hoods were chopped and the GP30 cab replaced with a GP35/38/40 style enclosure. Can’t find any ex NS rebuilt GP35s on the roster though. Most of the GP35s rebuilt into GP39s were of SP lineage.

The “Diesel Shop” web site shows NO GP35s on Norfolk Southern’s roster as of 1/20/07. Looks like they may all be retired.

As far as the ex-Southern units go, there is good news, Wheeling and Lake Erie has 23 of them on their roster. A few may still be in their SR paint, though re-lettered. This should be the only place today where you can still see High Nose GP35’s riding on ALCO trucks. ALSO, they have 1 ex-D&RGW GP35 (3045) still in it’s Rio Grande paint and number!

According to 1982-1994 Motive Power Review by Paul K Withers and Robert G Bowers, pub by Withers Publishing, all of NS GP 35’s were retired from 12/1988 until 10/1992. There were 147 units in 1982 and 0 in 1994. All the pix in the book show high hood units, numbered from 200-244, 1300-1328, 2645-2715, and 2910-2918. It does not reference where they went or what their fate was, only that they were replaced by SD40-2’s, SD60’s, and C39-8’s. Hope this helps.

2910-2918 were former Wabash and NKP units and all had short hoods. I believe some of the first 1300’s were also low hood, being Wabash and P&WV units ordered before the 1964 merger and constructed to the specifications of the ordering roads.

That’s what I thought.

Thanks all. I was hoping that they had one or two GP35s in some remote locale. I just picked up a new HO Kato GP35 in NS (rare today), and I model contemporary. Guess I’ll just have to mentally fudge it for a decade! Kato rules.

The dieselshop.com web site is a terrific reference. Thanks for the clue.

Another kool site is geocities.com/trainmaps, for current routes.

IINM, Guilford/Pan American Railway has some high nose GP35s they aquired from NS. I believe I snapped a photo of one at CSX’s Worcester, Ma. yard about 10 years ago…
