Favorite Locomotive?

Mines the F59PHi

No trainsets.

If I had to go with one, and one only, I have to say my favorite’s the Norfolk & Western’s masterpiece, the Class J 4-8-4 Number 611.

The best passenger steam locomotive ever built. Ever.

Have a look! www.retroweb.com/wp/611/

I fondly remember those old Fairbanks Morse Trainmasters, the sound that they made, and the vibration they put in the ground. None better!!

My favorite top 10 Steam locomotive:

  • PRR S1 6-4-4-6 (The Big Engine)
  • PRR S2 6-8-6 (Direct-gear-drive steam turbine)
  • PRR T1 4-4-4-4 (Passenger Duplex)
  • PRR Q1 4-6-4-4 (Dual Service Duplex )
  • UP CSA-1 and CSA-2 (Original Challenger 4-6-6-4)
  • CN&W H-1 4-8-4 (Duel Service Northern)
  • NYC Dreyfuss Super Hudson J-3-a (Hudson type passenger)
  • NYC Dreyfuss K-5 4-6-2 (The Mercury)
  • N&W Class J de-streamlined version
  • CB&Q O5b 4-8-4 (Duel Service Northern)

My Favourite top 10 Diesel Engine

  • ALCo PA/B
  • FM Erie-Built/ C-liners
  • Baldwin Centipedes
  • ACF Motor

From a comfort standpoint, I’ll nominate the SD40-2–electric sidewall heaters, and the blower heater in front of the Engineer made a great foot-rest. They were also nice to operate, and had a great 0-60 time of under 30 seconds (light engine).

My favorite has been the UP Big Blows (8500HP GTEL). It exudes a sense of raw power.

Electric- PRR GG1

SD40-2’s one of the best machines ever constructed

C44ACCTE. desktop stands are awful, but they are pretty tough reliable locomotives

SD70M good replacement for the SD40, not AS good, but a good machine none the less.

GP-7 simple and reliable

I agree. I also like the H16-44’s only because my grandfather drove one for 7 years (Victoria to Norfolk and back).

For some reason I would have thought it was a Baldwin…
