Favorite Railfan websites?

Hi all,

There seems to be quite the plethora of mildly on topic, and off topic posts of late, so I propose a thread where we can all share our favorite railfan haunts on the web. Do you have some favorite sites that you’d like to share?

Here’s a few of mine:

www.grumpysworld.com (the language can be a bit rough, though, so enter with caution)
www.rnp-railpix.com
www.underwesternskies.net
www.somewherewest.com
www.mtnwestrail.com
homepage.mac.com/allegheny
www.trainweb.org/travelogue/port.html

There’s a couple others, but these are the sites of railfan photographers that I greatly enjoy. The pictures on these sites transcend the norm of rail photography, and turn rail shots into high quality, artistic endeavors.

So what are your favorite sites?

here are a few I frequent:

Progressive Railroading (news)
http://www.progressiverailroading.com/

Railway Age (news)
http://www.railwayage.com/

Altamont Press (news & forum)
http://railroadnews.net/

Southern California railfan net (forum & photography)
http://www.socalrailfan.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=1

Feather River Rail Society (forum)
http://wplives.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi

A couple of mine are:
railfan.net
wplives.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi

www.SD40.com
Uncles site^^
www.rrpicturearchives.net
www.railroadradio.net
www.train-sim.com

Chris and All,

The only one that I know of on your list Chris is Chuck’s page. He has some wonderful material online. When there was that thread on ABO Canyon, I gave out a link to his Abo Canyon page, the railfan in New Mexico that started that thread really enjoyed it. I’ll have to visit and spend time at the other sites in your list.

Chad, thanks for those two more news links, I’ll look at them from now on out when I gather material for my daily news post on the PRM’s railroad board, link to today’s news that I’ve gleaned from the internet:

http://wplives.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=Class1;action=display;num=1123787021

I enjoy these sites for content and check them daily (heads-up stuff):

http://www.trainorders.com/
http://www.trainfoamers.com/phorum2/index.php
http://bbs.cartserver.com/bbs/p/1270/index.cgi

This one is special because its a forum run by the Portola Railroad Museum, which I’m a member of, and is a recent start up, I’m hoping it grows into a successful general discussion railroad board.

http://wplives.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi

I like these sites because I’m a member:

http://wplives.org/
http://www.nevadanorthernrailway.net/
http://www.nsrm-friends.org/

I started the NSRM friends site and ran it from 1996 to 2000, of course I liked my formatting of the site much better when I did it![:D][:D][:D]

I hate the pop-ups, but I do like the variety on Railpictures.com[:(]

http://www.railpictures.net/

I like this one because of its focus on preservation:

At the moment Grumpy took the archives down, he said he was looking to make them easier to search, keep in mind he is more about how to photograph trains then the trains themselves. He also said he was going to make a pg rated site and a beefer comment section for those into Grumpy’s thoughts.

http://www.railfanswelcome.com/RailfansWelcome.htm
Good site with maps, radio frequncies, and other info that you might want about a new spot to railfan.
http://www.railfanphillipsburg.com/
Good info and photos about Norfolk Southern’s Lehigh Line in western New Jersey and Eastern PA.
http://www.whrc-wi.org/railfreqs.htm
Lists Radio Frequencies for every major railroad.
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/
http://www.railpictures.net/
Both are good sites for photography.

Every now and then I like to go here and see what is for sale and how much.

Well, we can all dream of winning powerball can’t we? [;)] [:D] [:p]

http://Ozarkmountainrailcar.com

I went to the Ozarkmountainrailcar website the other day. Almost every engine they had listed has now sold.

I sure would be interested in knowing where they all went.

I like
http://www.trains.com
but I’m not saying why as I don’t want all you rabble posting there.

Here’s what I like:
www.trains.com/community/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=111 [:)]

http://my.coredcs.com/~bbokrlwy/index.html “Bruce’s Railroad Pictures”
Bruce has a somewhat eclectic site, similar to mine. We regularly swap information. He also has some beginner’s advice for building websites, that I learned from.

www.mikeyuhas.org “Mike’s Railroad Pages”
Mike and I also swap information, though it’s not always railroad-related!

www.railpictures.net (And I hate those pop-ups too! [X(])

I try to visit the sites of those who post on this forum too!

I have a couple of other sites to add to this list of Favorite Railfan websites thread.

I use these often to track units that I have taken photos of when I need to write a caption and want to include roster information.

Hope you enjoy,

Took a few minutes to look through your web page. Very nice - creative eye. Thanks for the link.

Jim

[#ditto] Like Jim says, very nice site. I enjoyed it Elrond!!

Thanks, guys – I try to add some new stuff every month, so feel free to check back. Here’s another great site that I didn’t see mentioned above.

http://www.bayarearails.net/

It’s a great selection of photos from four very talented younger shooters in the Bay Area.

Take care,
Elrond
