FEC has built a 8000 ft spur at the FLL airport to haul stone for the expansion of the runway 9R . Spur started july 2nd and first train run july 23rd. This new runway will go over the FEC and be about 15,000 ft long. To raise the runway FEC dedicated 2 - 80 car trains a day running from miami quarries to the spur. expecting to haul at least 15 K tons of stone a day to the airport. Total of 3.5M tons expected to be moved.
