Fillmore Yard - How many are there, and whose was the first?

Saw George Sellios’ new Fillmore Yard in the December MR. As usual, his modeling (and fidelity to Northeastern US prototype reality.) Wish my staging looked like that!

My real question, though, is, haven’t there been several Fillmore Yards on various well-known model railroads over the years? Who built them (railroad and modeler), who built the first and where did the name come from?

Chuck (who just found a blank in his notoriously spotty memory)

I think the late Frank Ellison had a Fillmore yard as well.

According to the article, Fillmore Yard is named after the Frank Ellison original as a tribute to him as he has been a big inspiration to George.

Perhaps but there was a Fillmore Yard on Allen McCellands V&O as well and I believe Bruce Chubb had a Fillmore Yard or Fillmore District.

Frank Ellison would have predated all of the above mentioned. Frank Ellison was one of the hobbies early pioneers and one of the earliest advocates of operation oriented pikes as opposed to simple running trains around and around. If I remember right, he modeled in O gauge.

Thanks for jogging my memory! Frank Ellison’s Fillmore was the first (of many, most if not all inspired by The Master.) I was sure there had been others published.

Frank Ellison’s Delta Lines ran from Chapelle to Fillmore via Colbert. Frank’s home in New Orleans was on Colbert, between Chapelle and Fillmore. A very good case can be made for the idea that Fillmore Yard owes its name to a named thoroughfare in New Orleans.
