Finding vendors thses days who carry Homasote board is a challenge. When searching the internet I’ve found businesses including Home Depot which say the stock Homasote but in fact they don’t. Any suggestions on where to find the it in the SF Bay Area? It’s an excellent product for layout building.
You might try their website, https://www.homasote.com/, which includes a search for local retailers.
Good idea, thanks, I will give it a try.
I can tell you where to buy it here in the Baltimore, MD area. Our local round robin club is working out the details of a bulk buy.
While not as commonly stocked as in years past, no real problem finding it here.

Chuck,
I bought Homasote for the extension I added to my railroad at Home Depot. (east coast) That was 2-3 years ago. Remember that “Homasote” is actually the name of the company that sells “cellulose-based fiber wallboard.” Don’t know if it will help, but you could try searching using some combination of those terms. . Checked the Homasote website and the search function said Dixieline in Solana Beach carries it - that’s maybe a 7 to 10 minute drive from my house.
I believe that Home Depot does carry Homasote, but the employees don’t know what it is.
Next time you’re in the store look for “sound board”.
The inventory of every Home Depot store is not the same. The ones around here no longer carry it. You can special order it, but the shipping is outrageous.

I’ve never seen it in my neck of the woods. A quick check of the homasote website says my local Home Depot stocks their 440 soundbarrier. I don’t think so. It doesn’t even come up on the Home Depot website. A product called “quietboard” does come up, but to get it in anything close to a useful size (4’x6’) you have to order an entire pallet of it. If you don’t want to spend $800 plus shipping, you can order a package good enough for 90 square feet, but that is a stack of 2’x3’ panels. Further, it says it is recycled fiber board, but the photo makes it look more like recycled denim or mineral wool, and it’s maybe 1/4" thick.
All very true. But doesn’t hurt to ask. At our local store if you ask for Masonite they’ll tell you they don’t know what that is. Asking for tempered hardboard gets a different reply.
I’d suggest trying independent building supply retailers and wholesale building supply companies. Even if they don’t stock it, you might be able to get it for a more reasonable shipping cost.
I have been looking for Homasote 4x8 sheets for a couple of weeks. Neither Home Depot nor Lowes sell Homasote (and no way to order it). I thought I had a source from a local building supply place (they said it takes 2-3 days to get), but when I went to actually order it they told me I had to order in 48 sheet packs. I need 5 sheets. I called the local distributor in Knoxville and they gave me contacts for other places that sell it. None of them stock it and all have minimum count to order (60 sheets).
So far the closest place I have found to get it (in stock) is from Menards in Richmond Kentucky. Which is about a 3 hour drive from me. So… road trip!
Another term could be “builder board”.
I’ll give Menards credit for their keeping what we need in stock. When I was planning my layout for around the tree for this Christmas coming up now on hold due to my daughter making me a grandpa. They had everything i wanted to deaden the sound of Lionel trains.
I couldn’t find it, but used a layer of Masonite/MDF on my current layout. It’s heavy, but it takes spikes well and deadens sound.
Checked with Home Depot, Lowes and Menards in my area. Only Menards seems to carry it.

No Menards around here, but a number of building supply places that have it, even if they have to get from their bigger outlets.
One of my favorite lumber yards will give me the best price I have found, if I needed a bunch. He has to buy a whole 60 sheet lift, but will sell it to me for $35 a sheet, $18 less than anyone else.
Otherwise $53 a sheet is the best I have found in smaller quantities.

Sheldon, buy a truckload and start a distributorship business.

About two years I bought a 4x8 panel from Home Depot of what is now passed off as Homasote (a contractor friend called it “fart-board” for it’s sound proofing capabilities) these days but it was a poor version of what we used to be able to easily buy. The original material was very dense and well compacted and would hold a nail really well. The new product was very light weight by comparison and I can easily pull out a set nail with just my fingers. Not saying the new stuff won’t do the job, but IMO it really is a vastly inferior product.
Menard’s sells it for $33/sheet. So if I add the $75 for gas for roundtrip roadtrip and buy 5 sheets it’s $33 + $15 = $48/sheet.
