Fire Season in Arizona - Photo

Floating in a raft on a lazy river is sometimes the safest place to be in Castle Canyon when the summer fires come raging through…

perry1060 thanks for the scene. Fire season in Arizona is for real. My Northern Arizona friend Bill Morris has worked for the Forest Service for close to 20 years fighting these fires. A clear mountain stream is a good place to be when these fires erupt. Watch out for the slurry bombers!

Very nice water Perry. There are very few rivers here that one can tube on though. I prefer the lower Salt River on lazy weekdays.

It looks like we dodged the fire season bullet this year, thanks to no idiots torching the forests.

Very nice Perry, how did you get the ripples/waves in the water?

Peter,

The two-part resin I used is called Pour-On and it set up between 6-9 hours after I poured it into my river-bed. During those few hours, I checked the resin every few minutes with a plastic stick (you can use an ink pen casing).

When the resin got close to setting, I used the stick and gently created horizontal ripples the width of my river until eventually they stayed in place. It’s just a matter of timing and patience. When the resin finally kicks, it’s like glass.

A wall-mounted spotlight hitting the water at about 45 degrees works well to bounce the light. My camera is in aperture mode, on the river, with no flash.

Very cleaver and very well done. Thanks.

Peter

Perry, beautiful image there. The water really blows me away and those rocks are excellent. Will definitely share this one with my siblings, all of whom lived in AZ for a time.

BigRusty, can’t tell you how many innertube float trips I took down the Salt growing up. Such wonderful memories, except for one time: I built a raft out of wood scrounged along the river, then started floating downstream on it, only to be surprised by a bark scorpion sting on the end of my little finger. Long story short, by the time I caught a ride back into town, my entire left arm was numb up to the elbow. Took days for all the numbness to go away. [C):-)] Rob

I will add my vote to the “Great Picture” comment list! I grew up just a stones throw south of you in Florence! My mom still lives there and all my cousins and friends are up in AJ/Mesa Area… I however am in Maryland. LOL.

Howdy ‘neighbor’ !!!
