Nearly 40 years ago I found a number of Tyco two and four light floodlight towers at a local “Claber’s” store. At that time the two light was $2.00 and the four light was $3.00. I have always run them on 12VDC from a filtered DC power supply. After all these years some of the bulbs are burning out. They are a unique pea shaped flat faced bulb. To date, I can’t find an exact replacement bulb. I contacted NJ international and they sent me some bulbs, however they are not flat faced pea size exact replacement. There is a difference between the old Tyco canisters and the NJ international canisters holding the bulb…Tyco has no slates and NJ has slates on the front of the canister. My question…does anyone know where I can obtain the flat faced pea sized bulb or what do you use for repair?
I wouldn’t hold much hope for finding those flat-fronted bulbs. I have replaced a few of mine with small LEDs and I used canopy glue to form a lens in the threaded bezel.
Something like these:
I took those slats out because 1, they cut down on the amount of light coming out and 2, they looked goofy to me.
If you don’t want to go the LED route you can still use an ordinary grain-of-wheat bulb. You might be able to use a paper punch and make a piece of acetate to fit behind the bezel BUT it may cause heat to build up if you burn the lamps too bright.
If you use LEDs you don’t have to worry about the heat. You would have to use a resistor, 1000Ω more or less to suit your brightness desired.
Hope that helps, Ed
Hello GM,
I can vouch for the LED path that Ed suggests, and either clear acetate or white milk bottle plastic as is standard here in Australia for 1 and 2 litreve cartons for the lens front behind the screw in. With the LED’s expected life of around 80,000 hours, you will hardly have any worries about needing to replace them.
Cheers
