I just recently acquired a brand new HO scale Proto 1000 series FM Erie Built Loco (life like) and it looks pretty good. I’m trying to find what type of passenger consists ran with this engine and for how long. I tried doing some research online but not find anything really useful. I know this engine ran until the late 70s early 80s as CNW only produced 4 of them from my understanding. Any help and/or pics would be great.
Gidday, Prehaps we’re at cross purposes, and I don’t want to rain on your parade but according to this site these locos, 6001A, 6001B, 6002A, and 6002B were scrapped, 1958-59 [:(] …
Yea I saw that myself after I posted that so that would limit the cars it ran like the bi-levels produced during the early sixties for commuter service would be out of the question so does that mean it used heavyweight passenger cars by Pullman???
Still trying to update my fleet and since I don’t know much about the older stuff I thought I would have you guys help me. I am trying to see what all cars ran on the Erie built FM passenger train and what currently do I have now and what other types of cars do I need. I have three heavyweight passenger cars but im not sure what. Since I bought this from a swap meet for a steal didn’t get to see whether they were 10-6 sleepers, coach, diners, etc. So can anyone tell by looking at the images what are these and what else do I need to complete a set. Thanks!
A photo in Patrick C Dorin’s book Chicago & North Western Passenger Service shows Erie built 6002A (an Omaha engine but in CNW paint) leading E6 5005A on the Penninsula 400, a 13 car all streamlined train. 10 coaches (one in UP colors from “Cities” train service), a diner, a tap/lounge and a parlour car. The photos was taken in March 1952.
Lloyd Keyser’s Morning Sun book Chicago & North Western in Color, Vol 1 1941-1953 also has a shot of an Erie Built 6001A on the Penninsula 400 leaving Green Bay in 1953. According to Lloyd’s caption: “The FMs were pulled from the general passenger pool and settled into the various Chicago-Green Bay trains paired with an {EMD} E unit. The “Erie builts” did not seem to hold up as well as the FM switchers and road switchers and were retired in 1957 to 1959 after only 10 years of service. Also retired were the lone ALCo and Baldwin units, having become surplus when the CITIES trains were cancelled {he is referring to UP trains such as the City of Los Angeles that were transferred from CNW to Milwaukee Road in the 1950s} in late 1955. Thus for the first time, North Western had an all-EMD passenger roster.”
I think that caption information should give you what you need even if perhaps not want you’d prefer to hear.
Regg, if you can get your hands on the book, Chicago & North Western, Official Color Photography, by Gene Green, Morning Sun Publications, on page 68, there is a beautiful color photo of an AA consist pulling 12 passenger cars over the Fox River at Green Bay, Wisconsin in June, 1954.
The caption under the photo reads in part, “The lead passenger unit is one of the Omaha Road’s ‘Erie Builts’. This is one of the trains replaced by bi-level equipment in 1958”.
The cars are all green/yellow Pullman-Standard streamliners.
Walthers produced a whole bunch of these cars a few years back, and I am sure that you can still find them from a variety of sources.
Yes that’s what I need to do. Will definitely look for that book. Like I said i bought the cars that seemed to go with the Erie built loco when I purchased it at the swap meet. But didn’t know for sure and since I intend on buying a sound decoder to put in it as it runs pretty good just wanted to make sure the cars that I did buy ran with it…i think they are heavyweights. been trying to upload the pic but won’t seem to upload. Maybe I’ll have to do it when I get home.
