Hmmm… missed that story, but then I didn’t stay up late enough last night to watch the news. Doesn’t surprise me- the railroad was probably switching some cars into the Quaker yard and had to stop to charge up the air or line a switch, and this idiot probably got impatient. And as long as some of those cuts of cars can get, it’s no wonder the train crew didn’t see him. Anybody who needs to get past the tracks has an alternative as well- the U.S. Cellular Center has a covered walkway going over the tracks which anyone can utilize.
I’ve seen this take place so many times in downtown CR.Transfer comes up from Beverly yard or on the return from North yard. The setup is situated poorly for the transfers.Pull across all the downtown crossings then wait for a switch to be thrown and back into North yard,or the North yard switcher pulls the transfer to Beverly thru downtown and wait for Beverly power to couple, pump air,and do a brake test.People get impatient and climb between cars or even underneath train.Always waiting to see or hear about some dummy getting killed. Not a pleasant thing to be anticipating, but it will come one day.
Okay, Now that’s just really dumb. Infact that reminds me of a story I heard. I’m going to make a long story short. There was a lot more to it, so I will get down to the details.
Man jumps into a gondola full of pipe. The train lerched and the slack sent the unsecured pipe straight into the guy. Well, they found chunks of him in the pipe a couple of days later. So I would recommend not jumping into a rail car even if you’re trying to get to the otherside.
About 4 years ago the coal dock dumped a car and had a body fall out.
FBI was involved and they said it was a tramp who jumped off an overpass into an empty coal car in Brainard and broke both legs.
He was alive when he went under the flood loader at Decker.
Seen impatient people climbing over cars at Jack London Square in Oakland. UP stack train stops blocking the street (the the container port in right next door to the square) so I watched a lady pick up her 5 yr old son and place him on the walkway of the well car, then climbs up and across and then picks him up and walks away. Train started to move again 10 sec after she got him off.
An empty coal train yesterday, was waiting to get into the yard. We watched an adult male, who didn’t want to wait for the train to move, climb the ladder on one side of an empty coal gon and climb back down the other side.
The real irony is there is a pedestrian underpass just across the intersection from where he was standing. He only got about 30 feet away and the train jerked to a start!
Guess you can build 'em, but you can’t make them use 'em…
I watched one fool in Burlington, IA cut across a stopped coal train. He put his foot on the coupler to pull himself up and over. He was lucky his foot did not end up smashed.
