Dear Glen
You may remember we contacted you some weeks back concerning a proposed rail journey between Denver and Salt Lake City, and you very kindly sent some info. and gradient profiles.
We duly presented ourselves at Denver station and with great enthusiasm , armed with your profiles, boarded the train.
To our dismay and profound disappointment it was announced that the train was to be rerouted on the Overland route via Cheyenne. We checked with the Guard hoping to alight but by then the train was gliding out and coupled with the fact that we had luggage in the baggage car, this was impossible.
The likelihood of us attempting the journey again is doubtful so we will never know what we have missed. Would you mind helping us on two points please?
- Is there a vast difference between the Regular route via Moffat Tunnel and our “Overland Route”, bearing in mind it was dark during the last hours before S.L.C. We drove into the mountains next day via Heber (saw the preserved line) and Provo. Is this a flavour of what we missed?
- Can you recommend a video of the Moffat route with possibly cab and lineside views.
Hope you don’t mind this further intrusion.
Best wishes Duncan and Margaret Atherton
