For Randy Stahl

Dear Randy,

I have really enjoyed your post about Smoke, Spraks, Fire and Scarry Noises. It is obvious you have been in the business for some time and are a good story teller.

My question is this: If you were to start a short line, with of course almost no mechanical facilities, would you go for MLW 420’s, GP 38, or GP 9? Why?

And don’t tell him S6, either… ;-}

It would be a toss up between the GP-9 and the GP-38, depends on the prices and parts availability. EMDs are one of the few engines that you don’t need extensive mechanical facilitys. I would prefer the GP-38 but with a limited startup budget it is more likely we would have to start with some inexpensive GP-9s

Randy,

Thank you. Your conclusions and mine are the same, but I am not a locomotive guy.
