For Trade -- Policy clarification please

Would someone clarify the forum policy for me please–

Is it okay to create a post regarding items I would like to trade with forum members for other items?

The actual policy language:

“- No advertising. Our forums should not be used as an advertising medium for companies who want to promote their business or products, or by individuals who want to promote their items for sale or their eBay auctions.”

I don’t know if a trading post will pass the smell test…

In the past, members (myself included) have posted items available as a give-away, sometimes requiring the claimant to cover postage only. These were okayed by the powers that be simply because they don’t occur all that frequently. I’m afraid if a trading/bartering post were allowed, the floodgates would open and we’d be submerged in threads from people wanting to trade their items as well.

Yes, I understand the dilemma. In my case I have been re-organizing the train closet, have made firm decisions about era, roadnames, and whatnot, and have excess items I’d like to trade. I don’t really want to sell them, I would like to trade them to someone with the reverse issue-- so I can trade them for like items of the correct era or whatever.

I think the idea of a separate forum for that has been discussed. Another forum I belong to has a separate Marketplace forum for that. I think it’s a great idea, personally.

But with Bergie leaving, I don’t know who would spearhead that project…

Yes it has. It may be something that “could” happen in the future. At this point, however, it’s not likely until the dust settles and Erik’s replacement gets comfortable and acclimated with their new role.

A Audiophile site I belong to has a section for items for sell from members. Site got 5% of what the item sold for. That worked out great for myself and other’s for some time. I made some new friends and found homes for some stuff I no longer wanted.

Bad side, people started to join the site just to sell stuff. Grumpy (owner of the site) then made the ruel you had to have 50 posting before you could sell your old gear. Then we started getting the stupid answer that where (yep, be there, smiley faces) just to get the posting numbers up! Next ruel seem to solve the problem, had to be a member for a year and have 100 postings. Silly stuff went away then.

On Yahoo Groups there is a forum, HO Yardsale, I think, that allows trade items to be listed. In fact, that is what the forum is for. Personally, I do not use it much as the search function is a bit clunky and there is no real way to search for a specific item. Still, all in all, most people say they like it. Best of all the price is right.

I’m on a video production board with a similar setup. the things that make it work are:

  1. NO ebay links. Items are listed with a set price/description.

  2. NO commercial sales.

  3. The list is tightly moderated by the owner of the site.

  4. It’s a “real names only” forum and the marketplace forum is available only to registered members.

Many model railroad forums, my own included, have a section for listing items for sale and trade as well as to list items you want to find.

Hi guys,

As of now the policy should be interpreted that there is no buying, selling, or trading allowed on the forums.

Thanks,

Dana
