FRA calls on state officials to develop shared vision of passenger rail service in the southeast
At a meeting 18 years ago in Fort Lauderdale there was much discussion on this subject. Maybe in another 18 years we will have something to show for it.
“The high speed study”?? Do you mean rapid research?
The I-85 corridor Washington DC-Richmond, Va-Raleigh-Durham, NC-Charlotte,NC-Spartanburg, SC-Greenville,SC-Atlanta, Ga-Birmingham, Al. This whole strip has seen huge amounts if growth especially from North Carolina south. Both in population and business. It primarily relays on roads for intercity transportation.
Years ago, the Railroad Passenger Association of Alabama did this. So did the National Association of Railroad Passengers. Lots of time and money could be saved by avoiding “reinventing the wheel.”
It means nothing to us on the Northwest, when we can’t get on-time service (if we get service at all on the Empire Builder). How about getting the FRA to help enforce existing freight railroad contracts with Amtrak and getting service to work throughout the country?
This should be interesting. Virginia and North Carolina have been pro-active in passenger rail service, while South Carolina and Atlanta have been just the opposite.
Kind of weird that every HSR system leaves Florida as a disconnected Island. This proposal says nothing south of Atlanta. FLHSR said nothing between Orlando and Atlanta. AAF says it’ll go to Jacksonville but will not use any stations that join up with the national passenger rail network.
RAIL Solution was formed in 2003 to contribute to successfully stop the rebuildingof I-81 through Virginia as an 8-12 lane truck toll-road. We now promote a prototype higher speed rail network in the Southeast, called Steel Interstate, to serve the I-40 and I-81 corridor between Memphis, TN and Harrisburg, PA with a minimum of two mainline tracks, electrified, FRA Class 6 track engineered for freight and passenger up to 110 MPH. Please visit us at www.railsolution.org to further your understanding of our alternative Steel Interstate strategy to reshape rail in the Southeast and across North America, and to see how you can help with either volunteer time, financial contributions, or both. Regards, Robinson Foster, Director, RAIL Solution
Those states have not shown interest from a political standpoint because they are red states. Southern Republicans are passenger rail’s worse enemy esp Ga and SC!

Hey, Y’all! There is another State down \this way called Tennessee. We have two or three natural “Corridors”: Atlanta-Chattanooga-Memphis, Chattanooga-Nashville, Chattanooga-Atlanta, and Chattanooga-Knoxville. If you haven’t driven I-75 to Atlanta from Knoxville or Bristol (I-81-I-40 and I-75, you don’t know what fun and games are. Yet, we’re not even mentioned. Our Amtrak Service, by the way, is only THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS, which passes through Western TN in the late evening-night and very early morning hours. C’mon, folks!
One thing that people in to New Orleans should join NARP and state ARPS to get Amtrak to restore the Sunset Limited.
