Franklin Mint Hudson J3 Locomotive
whats up with these do they run
are they good??

I have 2 loco’s from the Mint, the NYC Hudson and the Southern’s beautiful green Pacific. They look nice but they run quite poorly. The detail is at best fair. I only use mine as static displays in my home office.

The Mint also had that same Hudson loco painted up in a garish Christmas scheme a few years ago. Quite frightening if you ask me!

I ordered a Southern Pacific a few years ago.1st one arrived damaged, next 4 ran like crap and had obviously been used, the wheels were filthy. I tried cleaning the wheels but it didnt help. I finally cancelled the order and shipped them all back [:(]

Most of these are meant only to be display models and not for running – it even implies that in their advertising. They are also overpriced if you calculate the total cost by multiplying the number of payments times the amount of each payment. A definite red warning flag is the fact that they don’t advertise in any model railroading publication such as Model Railroader, Garden Railways, or Railroad Model Craftsman because these are not meant to be accurate, operational models.

Back in the '80’s Franklin Mint offered what they called “The world’s greatest steam locomotives” - in pewter, without tenders, including some that were almost unknown. The killer, for me, was their model of the JNR C11 class 2-6-4T - a nice little utilitarian locomotive, but not one I’d put on any top of the world list. Their advertising photo showed the ‘elephant ear’ smoke deflectors mounted sideways!

Ever since then I have taken Franklin Mint’s railroad offerings with a very large grain of salt.
