Freelance Steamers Tenders

For those modeling Freelance Steamers and buying them undecorated do you label the backs of your tenders with Capacity Data and if so how ( decals available ?)

I just guess a capacity basing my guess on decorated model’s data and hunt around decal manufacturer’s websites to find something close enough.

MicroScale steam locomotive decals usually include enough data on tender coal, oil and water capacity to do about 3 or 4 tenders, depending on size and type. I know that both their SP and Rio Grande steam loco decal sheets that I use on my brass lokies have a lot of tender information. The trick is looking up the tender itself for the correct capacaties.

Thanks

I’ll check them out

What did the memo from your Freelance Railroad Mechanical Department say? [:D]

One of the slickest ways to figure the tender capacity is to calculate it based on the measurements of the tender. You need a bit of basic solid geometry, a scale rule, the number of gallons in a cubic foot of water, and the number of pounds a cubic foot of coal weighs. Divide the tender into sections: The trick is to divide it into rectangles, right-triangular prisms, and cylinders. Calculate the volumes for each, and add them up. Then make your own decals for it. I’ve done it, but it gets a bit intense. At least nobody can say your tender capacities are inaccurate. [:D]

Or, you can be lazy, like I have been, and just ask the folks on the forum… [swg]
