What is the best freeware train simulator?
Microsoft Train Simulator can be found at places like Staples for $10 US. They’re a big office-supply company. I think that’s about as close to free as you’re going to find. After that, there are numerous web sites which offer free add-ons.
Check your system reguirements before going any further. Some one gave me a nice Train program that would have cost me as much as a new tower to upgrabe my system i.e. vidio card, RAM, prossesor etc. etc. I had to return it.
I don’t think there is such a thing as a free train simulator. Microsoft hasn’t supported their Train Simulator program for several years now, so its price has dropped drastically.
Trainz Railroad Simulator from Australia has taken the place of Microsoft’s program, but it is not free. Trainz requires a fairly high-powered computer with high quality graphics, too – much more so than Microsoft’s offering.
You can learn more about Trainz at http://www.railroadsimulator.com Minimum requirements are listed as Windows with 3D graphics, OpenGL, and at least 4G of available hard drive space.
Actually, there is, by a fellow from the UK. It has next to no graphics, but it is engineered to give a person the sense of what is involved in order to get a steamer from point A to point B.
Like all of them, it takes some getting used to, but after a while it is small-o okay.
Here it is:
I also remember a japanese train simulator version that was freeware. I downloaded and installed it but could not open due to my system did not have enough RAM etc. Do a forum search as the link was posted on one of the Trains forums. Good luck.
