Funniest eBay auction I think I've ever seen!

It’s an auction for an empty Atlas box that holds C420 locomotives. Starting bid $8.82"… ROFLMBO!!

Marlon:

LOVE IT, LOL!! [(-D] We should check back on the 26th and see what it really went for. Actually, it reminds me of the time that I saw a Pacific Fast Mail NP Z-8 Challenger going for an opening bid of $1 and got all drooly until I realized that what was actually on bid were new foam inserts for the BOX!

Oh well—

Tom

Not the first time for this kind of thing. I saw one once for an empty Lionel box and I think it ended in four figures.

Yes, I’ve seen Lionel boxes go for a lot especially if they’re preWar.

Notice this guy has 3 available.

So all you Atlas collectors who managed to buy your locomotive without the box can now rectify that mistake.

Wonder if this is the wave of the future. “That’ll be $19 for the boxcar and $20 for the box it comes in”

[(-D]

Paul

yes, empty boxes {especially for LioneL} can bring in some money for those who have them to sell.

The item in the box, with the box, can bring a much higher price when sold!

The better the condition of the box, the higher the price, and I’d say that box looks great!

Of course it all depends on IF the seller sells it, and FOR HOW MUCH!

They aren’t all worth only [2c]

Well, a perk of Walthers releasing a stone-age N scale tooling caboose included the perk of a “new jewel case!”

Darn, I was hoping it was a Blue Box! [:-^]

Hi,

Three years ago I got rid of my postwar Lionel boxes. Everyone sold, most for sums I could not rationalize. Some of the boxes were tattered and torn - and the ads depicted them as they were - and folks jumped all over them.

I wouldn’t laugh to hard…

Locomotives and cars in their original boxes fetch higher dollars over the locomotive or cars without their boxes.

Savvy collectors and horse traders knows this.

Laugh all you want to. I buy boxes all the time for loco’s I pick up at auctions, yard sales etc. Like Larry said, a box brings in more money. That very box will add 25 bucks to a locomotive. [%-)]

I didn’t realize the boxes were so important.

But I guess it’s a good thing, that I save all my boxes. But you should see my garage! OMG it’s getting pretty bad, with all the MRR boxes stacked over everywhere.

When my friends see it, they make fun of me too.

Sorry, but in terms of hilarity, but that doesn’t even come close to the auction where some deluded fool was trying to get $5,000 for a 40 year old Athearn SD45 and got all bent out of shape when people told him that it wasn’t even worth $50.

This one’s pretty funny, however: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1930s-GERMAN-MARKLIN-ELECTRIC-TIN-LOCOMOTIVE-w-TRACKS-/230552007372?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item35adf872cc

I don’t understand why people think that old lionel items are off the charts valuble just because they are lionel items. Sometimes age just does bad to things like model trains.

There are a lot of words that I would like to spout when people try to sell low value items for at least a couple grand, but then I would need my [soapbox]. This just goes to show you that people should do their research!

Maybe you should invest in some plastic storage totes for your boxes?

A dirty raggedy box lowers the selling price.

We should treat our boxes like we do our high dollar cars and locomotives in case we decide to sell or trade our unwanted models.

I’m not saying you get rich but,you will get a higher price for models in their box-be sure to keep your inserts as well-even X2F couplers in their bag if the model came with those…

Remember this my friends… In this era of limited production there are those more then willing to shell out the extra dollars for a missed model if its complete and in its box.

Ever price a prewar Lionel 5344? How about a post war Micky Mouse hand car? How about a post war NYC or Santa Fe F3 set?

The list goes on.

That;s just the collector vs operator mentality. If it’s all original and has the original box, it’s valuable to a collector, but if it doesn’t run it’s nearly worthless to an operator.

I don;t much get the collector mentality in anything - I love old cars too, but should I ever have the means to aquire and store one, it would be driven, like Jay Leno does with his, they wouldn’t just sit in a garage forever. The closest I come to ‘collecting’ anything is hanging on to a few Tyco and AHM items from the 70’s because they have sentimental value to me - but they aren;t duplicates of what I had back then, they are the actual items.

Truthfully?..I don’t find the auction all that ridiculous. $8 for a specific Atlas locomotive box is pretty reasonable to me - especially if you have that particular locomotive and want to protect while it’s in storage.

I might go as high as $15 - i.e. if I had a need for it. But I don’t own any U23s, U30s, or C420s. [:D]

Tom

Randy,Its called resell value. and if you want top dollar for your models you will keep the boxes-even operators wants the boxes and the instruction sheet and will pay higher prices…

A collector wants operatable models since those return the better prices then junk that doesn’t operate.

The 700E? Micky Mouse items? 2344, 2333, 2353, 2383? My point is is that just because that there are some really valuble items, not every item is truely valuble.

Also, you missed a few. The 400E State Set, 6464-100 blue feather car, 773 hudson, and some really good condition 2026s, 2025 early production, and some EP-5s.

Actually those was included in my “the list goes on”…[swg]

All I’m saying some models is worth a lot-example a United Class B 2 truck shay sells for around $500.00 as does a lot of the older brass steam engines.I seen some that sell for $1,500 on a routine bases.
