G&W to scrap 88 locomotives [MARCH 2025 UPDATE]

As of March 24, 2025, I have gotten updates in regards to G&W’s EPA scandal.

  • PNWR SD7R #1501 sold to BUGX in September 2023
  • PNWR GP9R #1801 sold to BUGX in November 2023
  • PNWR SD9E #1852 sold to BUGX in January 2024
  • PNWR GP9R #1803 sold to BUGX in February 2024
  • PNWR SD9E #1854 was stored at the AERC in December 2024 and I believe is still slated to be sent to the ORHF.
  • AKMD GP8 #707 was scrapped in January 2024
  • OHCR B23-7S 4092 was donated to the Age of Steam Roundhouse
  • ARZC SD40-2 4002 was scrapped in 2024
  • CAGY GP11 #1806 has been scrapped
  • CAGY GP11 #8720 has been scrapped
  • WTRY SW1200 1205 has been scrapped
  • WCOR SD40-3 #3346 has been scrapped
  • BPRR GP9 887 has been scrapped
  • BPRR GP18 926 has been scrapped

I was not delighted when this scandal came out. A lot of neat older motive power is getting axed as a result.

Though I’ve never seen it in my neck of the woods, I know NECR has/had a neat chop-nose SD-9, 1750. I know it’s expected to be scrapped, assuming it hasn’t met the torch yet.

I enjoy older motive power, sorry to see it go from all of the shortlines under G&W control.

Ok. I agree, a lot of old diesel locomotives are now endangered, and I think the G&W is the blame for this, since the EPA exists for a good reason.
