I was reading the June 2002 Trains, and I noticed that there are several locations in Georgia mentioned. The story “Jet-powered train chase” on page 76 describes several locations that I am curious about. One is a concrete coal dock north of Sardis, GA. Another is the NS Toccoa Viaduct, and also a small bridge nearby. I was curious if anybody knew where these were exactly these are located.

Sardis is located in the eastern part of Georgia roughly between the cities of Savannah and Augusta. It was once a station on the Savannah and Atlanta’s mainline from Savannah to a connection with the Georgia RR in Camak, GA. However, the S&A was merged into the Central of GA Rwy. in the 1950’s and the CofG management decided that the Sylvania-Waynesboro segment, on which Sardis resides, was redundant with their trackage and thus abondoned it. The coaling tower is one of the few remants of the railroad through here.
Toocoa is in northeast corner of the state in Stephens County. Norfolk Southern’s ex-Southern Atlanta-Charlotte-Washington main comes runs through here and passes over the viaduct mentioned in the article. Amtrak also uses this track for their Crescent service.
