Yeesh. 5000 too many. If EPA wasn’t so strict, we’d still be seeing AC44s instead of these horrible things.
We’ll be seeing this engine tomorrow with the 844, looking forward to chasing them!
Plus ES44AC4 and ES44ACH.
Seriously, though, congratulations, GE!
I believe that this achievement now makes the GE Evolution Series the most popular diesel locomotive in US history having achieved 5000 units produced during a 7 year build run to date.
The SD 40-2 was previously named as the most popular having achieved a total production figure of 3982 units during a 17 year build run. All this will make for an interesting article in next year’s Locomotive Special from TRAINS.
Good for GE! Love those Es44DCs.
Once again GE has made history by being the best. I love those four cycle pullers.
ES40AC? Try ES44C4.
what about the ES44C4?
Kudoes to GE for their great “winged pullers”. I used to take pictures of locomotivies and rolling stock 25 years ago and I like my old GE engines shots. As for rolling stock, 8 axle tank cars are hard to beat, and big 12 axle + flat cars are impressive.
I resently saw a “Mammoth” flatcar w/caboose going west on CSX through Effingham and it was quite a thrill. Fred
You have to hand it to GE, They have a very winning design and probably a competitive price for their locomotives. The former CEO of GE had a philosophy of being the #1 of what ever product line they were involved with making…and this design certainly illustrates the point. Was G?/EMD asleep at the switch years ago?
With that number produced, GE pushed quite ahead the learning curve to produce even more cost-effective high quality locomotives. It will be difficult for EMD to match this.
