Genny on the Lake Shore

For a couple years, my brother-in-law was living on Half Moon Bay in Croton, and visiting him meant a chance to do a little railfanning while the family caught up. Here’s a 2000 shot of the Lake Shore Limited passing by his place.

When he moved away from this spot, it broke my heart - LOL.

Thanks for looking.

Excellent work Charles, thanks for sharing.

Was it late by any chance?[:-^] Great shot!

Chas,

I must confess that I’ve snuck (does the OED recognize it?) out from family events many a time because nearly all of our clan live in Reading PA, the hub of the road. One of my sisters married there in 1975. Bored at the reception and coming up from my DC home, I persuaded my railfan friends in the (RDG obsessed) family to take a little walk up 6th Street to the plywood windowed Outer Station. A Mr. (was it) Hollingsworth was there, had the key to the door and guided us through the place.

From the dispatcher’s (D) office to the soda fountain / newsstand, to the ticket window, and where the 2-pack Chicklet/Adams machines stood. All the way up to the 4-sided clock tower with wooden gears and a view of the northward yards, when he swung the clock’s face in.

We got back to the wedding thing feeling a little sheepish, but I’m sure the four of us will never regret that tour.

The Outer Station succumbed to arson a couple of years later. I had spent so many happy times there as a kid, in my natural element.

Then there was my son’s graduation from Tufts in Boston. The hotel reception thing was dragging on and on and the Green Line was just down the street. Went to Riverside and back to Lechmere just in time for my toast to my son. By then everyone was pretty well toasted or bloated, and all went well. I guess everyone had a good time but I had a BLAST!

Wish you were back in your and my fathers time east of where you are, but ya know, keep on keepin’ on.

Thanks, Guys.

And to rixflix… your stories made me smile. I’ve done the same more than once myself. Sometimes I get away with it. Sometimes, I get in BIG trouble (like the time I took a one hour detour on the way back to my wife’s grandmother’s house and stopped at the very busy 69th Street grade crossing in N Bergen… which really sucked because my pictures didn’t come out either…) Other times, everyone is fine with it, and I have a great time.
