Get those cameras out, Fall foliage is about to peak - a special "zoom pan" of CN 3254 in Scranton, PA

I took a ride North to catch some of the Fall colors just about ready to peak in parts of PA. Gotta work fast - before it’s all just a blur!

Canadian National #3254 is seen here at speed near Tobyhanna with a nice large plume blasting through the foliage in an exciting zoom pan. A zoom pan is a type of pan where one zooms out with a zoom lens as the subject races towards the camera resulting in a blur of everything other then the subject moving at the same speed as the lens is zoomed out.

Enjoy!

Stunning photo… excellent job. I am going to have to try that.

Great photo! Almost makes me dizzy with the feeling of the speed of the loco. Again, very well done![tup]

Definitely a knockout shot, Mitch! Welcome to this Forum.

Let me echo the title’s sentiment–we were on a road trip for the past couple of days, and western lower Michigan, Northern Indiana, and northeastern Illinois are becoming pretty colorful. Plenty of reds this year–I expect that colors in this area will peak in another ten days or so.

Nice picture.thanks for sharing.

stay safe

Fantastic photo Mitch; Very well done!

I think I recognize the landscape. Was that train be climbing grade, passing the Tobyhanna Station and Keystone Propane at Church St.? Must be the annual Steamtown Excursion to Stroudsburg.

Nice photo. We used to have special excursions on the local RRs to check the foliage, those days are over.

This was Steamtown’s excursion to Tobyhanna and the photo was taken about a block or two before getting to the depot at Tobyhanna. They will be running there again this weekend.

Very nice photo. My only concern is that in order to do that, one has to man the camera to shift the zoom. It appears that you were really close to the tracks and as a result, really close to the oncoming engine. Perhaps a little dangerous for you and potentially quite unnerving for the crew. I did a composition similar to that about 20 yrs ago. By the time the train got to me, the engineer nearly had the train stopped and the fireman came out onto the front of the diesel to give me a strong earful of opinion about me being so close to the tracks. At first I was mad at the fireman for chewing me out (he seriously chewed my butt), but with a little time and perspective, he was doing me a favor. I was dangerously close and I’m sure they had no idea what I was up to as they approached.

Again, nice work, just be careful out there.

WOW!!! Great shot, and welcome to the forum. [;)][8D]

WHEWWWWWW thats great ! Im definately gotta try this the next time I get out to choo-choo…

Thanks for the inspiration !

Mitch is the acknowledged pan master, there’s no doubt about that. He’s got an unfair advantage over me in what he shoots, though!

Still, I think I win.
