GEVO's For Ferromex!

Hello,

I need some help. Recently I was at the General Electric Locomotive Plant in Erie, PA and found a Ferromex GEVO numbered 4679 sitting on the delivery track. Being from Ohio, I usually don’t see these Mexican units. What better way to get them, than to get them being delivered? I have a few questions though. For you locomotive order junkies, can you tell me just how many more GEVO’s that Ferromex purchased, and if you know, what trains to do they go west on? I know six were on NS 145 once, I believe CSX Q381 may pick them up. 4679 was blocked by an NS C39-8 at the GE plant which was really annoying, so I’d like to get better photos and a good time of when to catch them up at GE in Erie, PA. If someone can tell me if they’ll be there this weekend, that’d be super, because I may be heading up there this weekend. Anyways, thanks in advance for the answers.

I wouldn’t recognize a GEVO unless it was painted GE blue [:(], but here is an A-A-B FerroMex lashup (#4630, 4637 and 4609) westbound out of Tucson on UP’s Sunset route …

Let me say from experience, these units are really, really nice[8D]. Much nicer than most current U.S. units and more in-cab features.

I’d be interested in knowing that too. I believe that FXE just took delivery of 15 GEVO’s, #4660 through #4674, within the past two weeks (at least I believe that all 15 have been delivered). I wasn’t aware that they had more in the pipeline.

Interesting, FXE 4675-4679 were on NS 15J a day or two ago. Maybe those were the ones you spotted in Elkhart? Anyways, I really would like to bag some good photos of some Ferromex units. Thanks for all of the help so far.

The GEVOs are GEs best looking units in a long time, since the takeover of wide cabs. The larger radiator area balances them out better.

Not to be a snob, but I thought GEVO’s were intended for areas like LA, where there are stricter emission standards. Does Mexico have stricter emission standards? Or, maybe all new GE’s are GEVO’s?

I read on GE’s website that instead of they don’t make Dash 9’s anymore and they have been completely replaced by GEVOs.

They began delivering with #4600.

And BNSF has destroyed 3 in transit!! So to my Mexican brothers on the Ferro. Your welcome for us buying those motors for you lol. I havent seen any come by the Burg in a while( havent been paying to much attention sorry) but for a while there we were getting Ferromex GEVO’s and SD40-2’s all the time.

Well, since it seems Ferromex may be heading for the 4699 with their GEVO’s, this brings me to another question. How many more GEVO’s is KCS going to be getting? I am longing to catch my first shot of one of the KCS units in the new paint, and since I was blessed to live near the area where GE deliveries roll by, I’d like to know when a good time to get them is, and on what train? Thanks.

"The Kansas City Southern Railway Co. (KCSR) and Kansas City Southern de México S.A. de C.V. (KCSM) began taking delivery of units earlier this month. KCSR will receive 30 Electro-Motive Diesel Inc. SD70ACe locomotives and 30 GE - Transportation ES44AC units; KCSM will acquire 40 SD70ACes and 20 ES44ACs.

KCSR is scheduled to take delivery of 30 more SD70ACes in first-quarter 2008 and KCSM, 30 more ES44ACs in third-quarter 2008."

I don’t know if any of those 20 ES44ACs that KCSM is supposed to be receiving have already been shipped, but according to posts on the Yahoo group “KCS Notes” some of the KCS units are on the road. And I think they may have been delivered in gray primer, not with the final “retro Belle” paint scheme.

My most recent issue of Extra 2200 South (delivered back in a time when dinosaurs roamed the earth) mentioned only FXE 4600-4659. We saw some of those back last fall. Obviously the ones observed recently are in addition to those, and were not on X2200’s radar. I’ve tried traces of individual numbers above 4660, and have come up empty-handed.

About a week or so ago, my son (he’s six) ran into the house (I was watching him at the ex’s) asking what railroad is spelled “F-E-R I can’t remember the rest, but it ended in X” saying he saw 5 engines with that spelling go by (ex lives across the street from the BNSF “race track”) So, I was wondering if it was the new locos, a lite power move, or something else.

Murphy, the new Emissions standards apply everywhere in the US, all new locomotives for use in the US must now meet EPA Tier 2 standards. By agreement with their government CN and CP in Canada will also only buy locomotives meeting US Tier 2 standards. Canada does not have a law governing locomotive emissions, but the voluntary agreement is binding on CN and CP. One quirk from all this is that CP’s SD90MACs were built just before US Tier 0 standards went into effect, and would require modifications to meet this standard if they were used in the USA. Rather than modifying the locomotives, they are instead restricted to Canadian service where they are not required to be modified.

The difference in California is that after a certain date in the near future, only locomotives meeting Tier 2 emissions standards will be allowed to operate.

I believe 4680 is the highest Ferromex unit built.

Tier 1 locomotives continue in production, with both Quebec Cartier Mining and the QNS&L adding AC4400CW’s. Apparently there are 4 SD70MAC-T1 (4325-4328) for the Alaska Railroad being built that should be on the way now.

Has Ferromex absorbed Ferrosur yet ?

No, the merger (or aquisition) continues to be disallowed by the government. FXE’s lawyers continue to appeal the case. I suspect there’s more than a little behind the scenes cooperation between the two, despite the ruling. The 15 GEVOs that FXE just received (apart from these additional ones that are coming now) were supposedly to replace 15 FXE AC4400CWs that just got ‘sold’ to Ferrosur (FSRR). (#'s 4500-4516, except 4502 and 4504).
