Giving a Red Ball 50' Depressed Flat Car a New Life

Redball, a brass steam maker, also made a line of very unique prototype diecast/wood freight car kits. These kits look quite nice for their age…judging by the rivets and piping being so sharp and fine. Although not a perfect fit, their 50’ depressed flat was clearly based off of the PRR F29, which I chose to paint this for.

I found one preassembled for $1, with working sprung trucks. After finding it rather hefty and detailed for a flatcar, I could not pass on the deal. Stripped and totally rebuilt it, with improved kadee coupler boxes, uncoupling levers, and Mt Vernon decals. First time testing out the new painting vent hood…it worked alright!

Very happy with how it turned out. Need to put a load on this now…stay tuned!

Wow! The detailing on this flat car is nuts! Where did you find this anyway?

Fantastic model.
Congratulations.
I assembled a Red Ball kit and it turned out great.
With a few details, it stands out on any railroad.
I finished with my own road.
