I found a great deal on an undec proto 2000 e8 but it is missing one of the brake cylinders. It looks like delrin. Form my first go around in HO delrin would not glue at all. I don’t know why MR manufacturers insist on using this stuff. Has anything come out in the last few years that will glue this stuff. Or does anyoje have any other ideas?
Haven’t tried it myself but Micro Mark sells Dr. Mikes Formula 2 for bonding Delrin. It’s a CA varient and uses the usual Zip Kicker accelerant. Hope that at least point you in the right direction - someone here must have tried it. J.R.
They use Delrin and Celcon plastic for higher stress parts because it is stronger and more shock resistant than styrene.
The glue the previous poster mentioned may work, but is probably still a bit weak in shear strength, I just ordered some myself.
If it doesn’t work for you and you can’t get replacement parts from Walthers, I have some E-8 truck parts, including some brake cylinders, they may be a different color, but you can paint to match yours. Send me a PM or email.
As Jay noted, Delrin is a dense, hard plastic and a great material for machining parts that will experience loads and stress. It’s terrific machining properties also make it more difficult to adhere it to other things using glues because the surface is very smooth.
Mechanical bonding (i.e. screws) is the preferred method when working with Delrin. If this is not possible, an epoxy (2-part - e.g. Devcon) would be a better choice. If the part is actually Delrin and it’s possible to do this, try roughing up the surface that you plan to adhere. Like paint, epoxies like and need tiny ridges to dig their little claws into for better adhesion.
RTV might work. It’s a silicone product and would be much more flexible than expoxy. However, RTV is going to be more difficult to apply in small amounts because it’s more viscous (thicker) than epoxy.
Thanks for the help guys. I am wondering if JB Weld would work. I may have to do a gluing test on this stuff using all of the updated glues that is out there. Modelmaker I will send you a PM.
