I was wondering if any one on the forum has spotted any GMD1’s on CN, shortlines or anywhere? I wan’t to photo one, so far the only one i’ve photographed is in the Winnipeg Railway Museum. I heard that sometimes they will occasionally run on the High Line.[|)]
They have them in Calgary, there is one here in Melville, I saw a few go through here a few days ago and they use them in yards and industrial switching all over. Gotta be in the right places … they got them everywhere.
Jame’s dad operated a train that brought them to the dead line I believe.
Remember how I said there was one here in Melville … weeeelll the beltpack engine was in the shop today soooo we had a hogger and a GMD1 for our power … it felt so great switching with a GMD. ahhhh good ol CN
I could only dream of that, lucky guys. Gone are the days that they were all over Manitoba pulling strings of 40’ grain boxes, and still had spark arrestors and A1A-A1A flexicoil trucks. What i’d do to see one in action.[|)]
There are two at Woodcrest shops in Homewood. However, they are both sitting on shop trucks and may be candidates for scrapping.
Theres a few in BC running on Southern Railway of British Columbia that they purchased from CN.
Here is the scoop on the GMD1. About a two years ago the Canadian National didn’t need the locomotives. They were selling them off to other shortlines. Some have survived and sold off. My dad had two of those locomotives on his train a year ago and was taking them down to southern Wisconsin for some shortline that had bought them.
There a pretty cool locomotive. At first I thought they were some type of NW5 and thought they were the weirdest NW5 ever. But found out later that it was Canadian Nationals version of the RS1.

PLease keep reminding me - I’ve gotta see the ones here [Calgary] before CN decides to replace them with GP9Rs or something…
