I have see in a photo a very short view of a Soo Line gondola coil car. I’ve also seen one in WC paint. I was wondering if any one had any pictures of it and any information on how to build it.
Sorry this photo is’nt that good. The coil car is on the Right.(I didn’t take this photo)
You may have come across this page http://crcyc.railfan.net/crrs/coil/coilcr.html, which has a number of decent photos of modern-era Gondola-As-Coil-Car (just look down the page). No real plans or dimensional data, though.Actually there’s a few other types of coil cars on that page, including converted bulk-head flats. Wiki claims the PRR came up with early models of standard coil-cars in 1964 or so.
I remember a few models of covered gondolas offered years ago - heck, a quick check turned up the Athearn model. Perhaps you could use some cut-down Wathers Coil Car hoods, and a standard 52’ Gondola (I’m sure there was at least one mdeler press article on doing just that, but also discussed building the interior coil cradles too.
Hello WCfan. I saw a couple of gondolas with steel coils in them just the other day. Also, a friend of mine has a couple of N scale coil gondola models that have racks laying across their floors that the coils sit in. I believe there’s four coils to a car. Hope this helps. Good luck.
In the past two years the Soo Line Historical & Technical Society ran an issue with an extensive article about all the Covered Gondolas the Soo Line acquired in the 1960’s.
The car in the photo had slightly sloped covers with roofwalks.
Contact the Soo Line Historical & Technical Society at www.sooline.org to find out how to currently order the Fall 2004 issue of The SOO to see the complete article with all the photos, text, and drawings.
