Good way to weight down dummy locos

i have 2 athearn F7A dummies and one athearn S12 dummy i want to weight down. what is good way to weight them down and with what: anything in walthers catalog which would work well?

Gidday, I generally to use fishing weights or sheet lead.

A popular suggestion on this forum is used automotive wheel balancing weights.

Others say that using pennies are the most cost effective method, I can’t comment we did away with pennies in 67 and 1 & 2 cent pieces in 89.

I use good old fashioned sheet lead rolled up so it fits in the middle of the frame either glued or taped down.

Where sheet lead must be rolled or folded to fit, I find that Wal Mart lead fishing weights in various sizes can be easily hammered to fit as rectangular solids into various spaces, and the range of sizes makes shaping them by weight combinations fairly quick. I used Wal Mart as well to get the auto trim adhesive that bonds them to the frame of a dummy loco or freight car, etc. Besides, for this frugal modeler, they are cheap!! Cedarwoodron

Many hobby shops sell self adhesive lead or teflon weights, originally designed by the Pinecar division of Woodland Scenics for Cub Scout pinewood derby races.

For my money, you can’t beat a couple of old fashioned steel washers stacked up.

Athearn dummies are a pretty good weight as they come - why the need for more?

Now if they were powered units, by all means add some weight. I ballasted 3 Athearn U-boats to an ounce-or-so over two pounds each, using custom-cast lead weights. They were great pullers. [swg]

Add motor and gears to them…

David, great Humor, however, that’s pretty much how I feel about “Dummy” engines.

I have found that Athearn dummy Fs can be both powered chassis- less motor drive/ universals/ worm which do have some weight to them and basic stripped frame w/ plastic truck/ wheels and no other form of weight.

I would never use pennies to weight down anything. They eventually work their way loose and rattle around all over the place.

I use stick on wheel weights for box cars and anything else that need weight. Go to a tire shop and they may just give you some.

I use pennies, in a coin sleeve, wrapped in tape, epoxied in place. No problems with pennies shifting in decades…
