Got two athearn genesis f units at a show today.
GN of course.
Any detail kits worth it?
How are they detail wise?
(keep in mind that my friends picked them up, as I had to work at the RR)
Compared to BLI?

As far as detail and corect contours, the Genesis are the best. The QSI sound system in the BLI is better than the MRC sound in the Genesis(if you bought sound equipped units). The Genesis drive is very nice. I have seen the BLI engines run, but have had not run any.
Where did you get them - Woodbury Show(Newport Club)?

I was planning on getting some DMIR SD38’s or possibly RSD15 (which I am going to purchase with sound for Christmas), but I guess to show was really boring (i.e not alot of stuff) so my friend knew GN is my second love, and got A/B Athearn Genesis F7’s (I dont know for sure but I assume NO sound) for $120.00.
He has a BLI F7 and the sound is good. Sound wise. As far as railroad sounds…well it gets on your nerves after a while and is not realistic to an F-unit. It sounds the same as his BLI NW2.
I’m sure you’ll be quite satisfied with your purchase. I did the same thing-bought a GN pair of Genesis F3A/Bs at a swap meet. The detail on the Genesis (Highliner) shells is second to none-IMHO, much better than the Intermountain shells, and Athearn really sis a nice job on the factory paint (at least on mine). TYhe one thing to understand with these models is, they represent locomotives as delivered by EMD, so they don’t have any of the GN-specific, GN applied details that characterise Great Northern F-units.The pair I got was Athearn’s 353A/B set. I wanted to do something with them slightly different, so I redetailed them to represent the 261A/B set as they appeared in about 1957-59-before they were renumbered to parts of 350-series sets. I am quite pleased with the results, and best of all, I was able to do this without having to give up the great factory paint-even though I do custom paint GN equipment. Like I said, you did good and I’m certain you’ll like them.
They are great looking units. The only thing I am dissapointed in is the grills. Nice quaklity girlls, but they kepp bowing out and you can see the stuff used to attach them.
