Grade Crossing Signals for Bike Trail

My HO road has two places where a Multi Use Path (MUP) crosses tracks, I’d like to protect the crossing with a crossbucks+lights setup, i.e. no gates. Given that signage on trails is usually smaller than on highways, I thought to use N scale crossing lights. They’re about half the size of HO.

Has anyone done this? Do they look too small?

There may be a ‘standard’ for a crossing with crossbucks w/lights on a road, even a rural one. I would use the ones from Walthers or Tomar. Ebay has some from Wehonest that aren’t bad looking, maybe a tad smaller…

I would not use N scale signals on an HO layout. I like Neal’s advice to use Tomar Industries signals. I use them on my layout. Nice and detailed,

The one crossing shown with flashers just looks like it has your standard highway xing flashers used.

More of a pedestrian xing, but uses standard walk/don’t walk signals.

If you are willing to settle for a railroad crossing sign, Tomar Industries makes a nice pair.

My layout is littered with these roadside signs. I use them for road crossings in a large yard.

I think some actually do use smaller crossbucks and lights. I haven’t really seen it that much though. What I have seen for bike paths is the gates are not as long as they would be for a lane on a street or highway. Some also have a sign telling cyclists to dismount to cross.

Do they?

Dismount, that is.
