I am new to the hobby ( HO ) I often see on track plans 2% grade. Is this 2% of scale or 2" in 100".
It’s (in really basic terms) according to books and other experts on these forums;
2% - the track rises 2 inches in 10 feet of distance.
1% - the track rises 1 inch in 10 feet
and so on
A 2% grade is,as you guessed it,a 2 in. rise for every 100 in. of train movement.
[#ditto] Yup, what he said.

One says 10 feet the other says 100 inches which is it
The correct answer is 1 inch per 100 inches would equal a 1 per cent grade.

The formula for grade is: “rise over run”. Divide the amount of rise by the lenth of the run, then multiply by 100 to get the grade percent. Just remember to keep all dimentions the same. (inches/inches; feet/feet; etc)
10 feet is actually 120" but who’s checking he he. =)
