which is better to use a grass mat or ground foam?
Using ground foam will allow you to vary the color, so it doesn’t look the same all over. Also, using a combination of fine and coarse foams, will allow you to vary the texture between areas.

If you’re into the “toy layout” thing, go with the grass mat. Serious modelers use ground foams, dirt, saw dust, and what have you. A grass mat won’t define the place of the country your layout is set in.
go with grass mats and be laughed at for your whole modelling career!
put the extra work into it and go for ground foam. do it the easy way: spread white glue and saturate it with the foam.
I don’t like the look of grass mat at all. Ground foam is much more realistic looking.
I always thought of grass mats as the astro turf of model railroading!!!
like the others here go with the foam it looks more realistic
I put down a grass mat only as a temporary measure because I didn’t like looking at all that pink foam!
I am now covering it up with “real” landscaping and doing better and better work as my skills improve. I’m not dissatisfied that I used grass mat to get a quick start, but I would never consider it a long term solution.
Heu cheese go with the ground foam in the long run it will look better but depending on the size of your layout it may even be cheaper with the large canisters now out their. As well as very texture look at some of the long grass(string)material from woodland senics as well you can do some tall grass and weeds with it,give the layout that wild lived in look. Its impossible to make a grass mat look like natural scenery. Use foams and treated dirt. Texture varies. Nature isn’t simple.
If you want your model railroad to look like it is set on a pool table, go with the grass mat! [:D]
