Great Model Railroad Car Journey.

Let’s see if anyone is interested? The Great Model Railroad Car Journey.

The idea is to send a model of a car to each participant in turn. Seeing it on their layout. Once photographed and posted on here, send the car onward (by pm - ing the next person for their address).

If interested enter your name on this thread.

I can supply a car.

David

It’s a great idea - If you can get folks who don’t know you to share that information.

I’ve been doing this ‘car sharing’ with 2 other guys I know and we have virtual operating sessions for many years now. We have the exact same freight car and we ‘move’ them from industry to tindustry. We take photos of them departing and arriving on our layouts. Once photographed, we post the pics and videos on our blogs for our friends to read and enjoy.

Good luck!

Neal

I would participate. I don’t know how cooperative the MR messaging would work to share addresses, though.

Some of the members here can not or will not post photos so there’s a big chunk of participants that can’t join in the fun.

Last time I sent a package just 350 miles away to HOn3 Critter it took a detour to Sydney, Australia, and a three-month holiday!

Cheers, Ed

The way the postal system has been, you sure you want to do this? [(-D]

Well, since 2020 was the year of virtualism, and 2021 is starting off the same…
Create a pdf (or equivalent) of the originating freight car using images taken of it from a number of angles. Have the pdf available for download or email it out, whatever. Participants in this activity then create a mock-up of the freight car (finally using all those ‘make 2D look 3D’ articles written over the years), and pose it on their layout/module (again, posed so it looks like a model - likely photographed straight on, but some are skilled enought to create and assemble a card model like our predecessors sometimes did in the pre-1930s era) and off we go.
Failing this, just photo-shop and image of the freight car on the layout/module.

David) I like the idea. I cant participate, but i like the idea. So if it happens, I will be following it with great anticipation.

Reminicent of when MR did a similar thing with the Hiawatha. I think that was back in '84…

Still, i like it!

Good Luck!

Douglas

I like this idea, and I think it should be tried whether or not we start the ‘visiting car’ mail arrangement.

But…

I have a grim suspicion that this would turn into memes.

First bet: how long before someone photoshops Tom Hanks next to Bernie on top of the car?

Interesting idea on this, but I can’t say I would be all that eager to participate. Primarily due to shipping costs. While it’s cool to see a train car travel the world to different layouts, I feel it’s a waste of money to send a car to someone when they’re just gonna send it to someone else. For those of you who want to do this project, please do and I’ll be watching with interest.

I am all-in on this.

I do not have a layout, but I can assemble a diorama and pose a good picture to share.

If I am way down on the list of participants, I might have part of a layout in time. Or I can go twice… All kinds of possibilities.

In fact, since David already has my address, I will volunteer to go first, and get the ball rolling in a big way… I just had an inspired thought…

Also, if Thomas wants to participate, he is close to me, and I could drive it to his layout.

This is sounding like an exciting idea!

I’m interested, however shipping costs and such are a big hurdle, as it isn’t cheap. Chutton’s idea seems like the most viable way to go.

Nope nope nope.

We need a real model or it isn’t a special event.

-Kevin

My layout is no where near up and running, but I can see what would happen, some people would get the car, take a pic and send it out the next day and some people would take a month or two to turn around the car.

Yes. Things like this will happen, and eventually the car will disappear. But, it will be fun along the way.

When I was working, at Christmas time we would take a photo of our crew at YVR (Vancouver International Airport) and tape it to the inside of one of these AAA cargo cans. Others crews from all over the world would do the same and eventually, some of the cans made their way back to Vancouver, sometimes years later. It was really cool to see all the places in the world that AAA had visited and so many crews took the time to add a photo of themselves. Being a Federal Government crew we would send stuff on military aircraft sometimes to some remote places and getting pics back from those was really cool.

I like the travelling railcar idea, though I will not participate as I currently have no internet presence and wish to keep it that way. I will enjoy watching the little guy roll (fly) his way around to the layouts of the world though.[:D]

Um… where did you think this forum group was located?

Meaning, if I Google my name absolutely nothing comes up.[tup] The police/public safety professionals in the family use that term when hunting down the bad guys or want to keep a low profile which is very hard to do these days. Even my Facebook account is an alias.

I just Googled Batman, and you might be surprised how much information came up.

Well, the secret is out now so I may as well post a photo.

I think it’s a terrific idea. A breath of fresh air. Reminds me of BBC TV’s The Box when they painted a shipping container and folk around the world snapped it on it’s non-predetrmined trip in 2008-09.
