Does anyone know of some good train movies. I have seen “Runaway Train” and “the Train” from the 1960s. I have also seen “Von Ryan’s Express” which was good. Any other good ones that anyone else may suggest! Would like some new material.
The Silver Streak and The Great Locomotive Chase are both pretty good.
“Atomic Train” is a great movie. Sometimes, you can catch it in two parts on SciFi Channel, or CBS. I love that movie, and “The Train” with Bert Lancaster, I didn’t see much in “Runaway Train.”

Thanks for the thorough list vsmith! Anyone else???
Murder on the Orient Express
Planes, Trains & Automobiles
Under Siege 2: Dark Territory
Honorable mention:
The Bond movie where every car chase’s worst nightmare, a modern main battle tank, is obliterated by an armored train.
The Harry Potter movies - the Hogwart’s Express.
The Mummy - Brendan Fraser
North by Northwest - the Hitchcock thriller with Cary Grant and Eve Marie saint.
High Noon - okay, so it only has a little train action. You can’t deny that it’s a dramatic moment when the train pulls in to the station.
Here’s a link to a 5 page thread we had on this back in the summer. Lot’s of good recommendations here:

Ed (who still has to take junior to see The Polar Express)
Oh Please! I thought Atomic Train was one of the worst [xx(], especailly as it related or should I say doesn’t relate to real trains. See my review “train chaser” on Amazon.
Unfortunately I don’t know any great train movies. For good ones I would have to go with some of the other posters on The General and Silver Streak. Back when I first saw the silver streak it took me a while to figure out where it was. I wasn’t thinking outside the boarder.
I actually have been spending money on the DVDs of just trains not movies with trains in them. I really like The “Santa Fe Odyssey Volume 1” by Green Frog Productions. It has a shot picture of the Alco PAs blasting out of the Lamar Colorado, station.
EDIT – Since I originally posted this and because of the other responses I watched,
Emperor of the North. It is great. Great shots of trains. Don’t know how realistic it is but loved looking at the GN, NP, and SP&S equipment all over the place.
I totally forgot about the Polar Express! That’s the best train movie EVER, IMHO.
I never seen this movie, but sounds good “Strangers on a train” A. Hitchcock
The end of “Mission Impossible” on the LGV
and “Switchback” it sucks.
STRANGERS ON A TRAIN is a GREAT Hitchcock thriller–one of his best, but very little of it has to do with actual trains. Just the first part.
GREAT train flicks, IMO:
NIGHT PASSAGE
UNION PACIFIC
DENVER AND RIO GRANDE
THE TRAIN
VON RYAN’S EXPRESS
A TICKET TO TOMAHAWK
and the absolute, ultimate, incredible Grandaddy of them all:
THE GENERAL
